[WTB] Any Used Mech Board (working or not)
« on: Thu, 28 March 2013, 12:17:23 »
Sup GeekHackers,

I need to practice some soldering and desoldering before i begin a side project and eventually build my GH60s.  I am looking for any keyboard that has mech switches (preferably cherry mx switches).  I would really prefer to find some locally in Denver, but I have called a few places and no one seems to even know what a cherry switch or mechanical keyboard is.  Ebay could also be an option as well, but I havent found anything less than 30 bucks and I havent found any listings for broken boards.

So want to clear out some space? Got an old Cherry board that ghosts or has a few broken switches? Let me know.

You could always buy one of those G84-4100 boards from eBay for $16 shipped. It has Cherry ML switches, not MX, but you could still use it for soldering practice.

i have never seen a cherry ml keyboard. i was under the impression that ML switches were Cherry's version of the scissor switch.  I will snag two of those unless I can find something with MX switches. Thanks JD for the idea.

The keyboard with cherry ML switches being referred:

I remember each switch had 4 desoldering points you can practice on (unlike MX switches that only has 2), which I guess is a good thing if all you're looking for is practice. But what I think would be a better option is to get an old keyboard with cherry MX switches off ebay, even if it's busted up. That way you get to practice soldering/desoldering and still get to keep some switches at the end to use for your GH60. Switches are not cheap so you might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

If all you're really looking for is the soldering/desoldering experience, then any old electronic will work. It doesn't have to specifically be keyboard, so I'm sure you have some of those laying around the house.

WhiteFireDragon - yo man i like where your head is at. that is what i am shooting for. hoping to find a busted up mx red or blue board to salvage switches and mess around with soldering. then reuse the switches on one of my 60% projects. I just cant seem to find broken boards on ebay that arent $49.99+.  For something broken, I want to pay less, even if I can fix it.  I think it is a matter of principal. Hell and for 50 bucks i can get a new QFR if I search hard enough.  That said an old broken keyboard with nice caps (like 2 tone beige or dolch) would be justifiable.

And you are right that I can get other electronics, but for some reason I specifically want to only focus on keyboards as of now.  I am also a hardware tech for my daily job so messing with nonkeyboards feels like work (even though i love my job).  I am also one of those people who obsessively focuses on one thing at a time.

!3oilermaker - i sent you a pm. i am interested. lets talk about the details in PMs.
