Ducky Facebook just teased Ducky DK2108S
« on: Fri, 19 April 2013, 04:43:23 »
It says "DK2108S coming soon.... !"

...wut. Is this like a Ducky Zero Shine? How will this be different from the current Ducky Shine II??? I don't get what they could do differently...

Sorry if this thread already exists. If so, I'll ask mod to delete.

I think they'd differentiate the Ducky Shine Zero by limiting the illumination options (as compared to the Shine II).  I think they will leave out the custom illumination layout.

Oh you mean like it'll only have like a limited option of just on and off options for the LEDs?

Oops I said Ducky Shine Zero instead of Ducky Zero Shine  :))

Anyway, yup...I meant something like that.  Keeping it simple would bring costs down and, in the end, lower retail prices.

Besides, Ducky wouldn't intentionally create the DK2108S to compete against its Shine II.  The whole point is probably to expand their product line to include a cheaper alternative to the Shine II.

Oh...I also think that the DK2108S will carry over the non-removable USB cable from the Ducky Zero.

New Ducky DK2108S with Blue LEDs

Not too shabby :) I probably wouldn't end up getting this keyboard because I already own a Ducky Shine II (never got it for the backlighting anyway but rather for the Clear switch) but this is definitely a great opportunity for others with lower budgets. This is why I love Ducky; they always provide more options than anyone else in terms of quality and price.

So I asked Ducky Facebook this exact question " How will this be different from Ducky Shine II?"

Ducky Facebook's answer: "Yes"

My question was the only English in that entire thread with all Chinese and Chinese names EXCEPT a one Dennis Engelbert  that liked Ducky Facebook's "Yes." The hilarity.

I guess it was my fault for posting an English question in a Chinese filled thread.

It's worth repeating that the Zero series uses newer improved stabilizers that may be carried to the rest of line depending on customer feedback.

So far from all the translated Chinese reviews that I've read they have been well received.

I noticed that too and it's funny.

It is real odd that Ducky would make a cheaper backlit option which could drive potential customers away from their more premium Shine II boards. I can't fathom how a handful of less features equate to a $20-30 cheaper board. NCIX has DK2108S listed around $120 compared to MK.com Shine IIs $130s (TKL) to almost $150. I have a feeling Shine IIIs are coming sooner than later. Hopefully Ducky has a good doubleshot backlit option for Shine IIIs to justify the more premium price.

One area that the Zero is better than the rest of the Ducky line is the non-detachable cable.  Even if there are no issues with hub damage it's annoying when the cable keeps falling out of the channels.

Well I haven't had that issue—all the detachable Duckies and Leopolds I almost require pliers to plug in and out. I can see how some would prefer a fixed cable.

Are the Zero backlit keycaps any different than Shine IIs? Ducky touts water etching on the Shine IIs, maybe that technology "feature" isn't used on the Zeros? Etched ABS keycaps are still bad. Guess we'll have to see what settings options the Zero has.

New pic from Ducky Facebook:

I agree with jabar and dante in that I can't see why they would make this decision... It's only $20-30 less than the Shine 2... why would they make something that would compete with their own products? Maybe they didn't have a choice and the Shine II wasn't selling enough? This wouldn't make sense though because from what I'm seeing, the Ducky Shine II is selling like hotcakes. There is also the possibility that this is their way of providing a more "affordable" backlit keyboard which will just phase out their higher tiers while simultaneously reduce costs/increase profit??? If this was the case, this would be a step backwards for Ducky :( I honestly want Ducky to keep moving up in reputation because I think that their DK9008G2 Pro series are up their with the best (Filco, etc.) if not better.

I do, however, want to try this new "improved" stabilizer. In all honestly, I have no complaints whatsoever with the stabilizers in the new Ducky DK9008 keyboards. They are smooth, consistent/well balanced, and definitely more easier to deal with than Costar stabilizers.

So on this thread/comments on this new update someone named Gan Wei Chean asked:

[What are the different between this and ducky shine 2?] - exact question I asked in an earlier update

and I answered for him and Ducky Facebook:

["yes" - Ducky Keyboard]

I hope I don't get internet raped by Ducky Bookface when they realize I'm lightly trolling in their **** but I highly doubt it, assuming they can't even comprehend the troll nor understand the English :))

All the Leopold TKL and CM Storm QFR's I've owned have had this issue.  I also witnessed someones Ducky TKL do the same thing.  Maybe they fixed it on yours?

For a detachable cable the best solution I've seen to date is CM Storm's upcoming XT with the external full size USB port.  Hopefully Costar have learned their lesson from the Rosewill fiasco.

Getting closer ... :)

Anyone heard anything about a TKL version?  I am thinking maybe under $100 - maybe around $90 - if there is.

I honestly don't see them charging less for the TKL version. If anything, I think may even charge $10 more like elitekeyboards does with their Leopolds. I know it makes no sense because why pay more for less? But if one thinks about it business-wise, TKL sell better and the demand is higher so why not charge more :( I hope I'm wrong though.

Pretty sure mechanicalkeyboards.com and NCIX has had the TKL versions for $10 less than the full size for the models that are available in both. I don't really see this trend changing.

Ruh roh. Maybe we aren't out of the red just yet :S But seeing that these will probably be sold on mechanicalkeyboards, chances are they'll be cheaper... hopefully.

I probably will be buying one, but TKL, except Shine Zero TKL are not listed yet.

Hence not worried, but curious with eager anticipation :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I just noticed from NCIX, that DK2108S is only $10 cheaper than Ducky Shine II.

Which would also mean potentially they gonna raise the price on Ducky Shine III.  Otherwise there will be no point to buy DK2108S if it's only $10 cheaper.

We're just getting ripped off here in North America. In Taiwan there's a $40USD difference between the Zero Shine and Shine II which is quite substantial and gives more than enough reason for someone to choose the Zero Shine. The Zero Shine's price point is meant to be below $100 (hence the entry level designation). NCIX just decided to rip us off.

Any info on the Shine III? I know there was a thread on it earlier with pictures from Facebook but that got taken down. I'm expecting Ducky to announce the Shine III at their Computex event on June 4...

I don't believe any new information is out on the Ducky Shine III as of yet. I guess we'll see.

Very easy. Either concede the lower cost market to someone else, or compete with themselves. Latter is many times more preferable to the former.

I would probably be considering this if the number row legends weren't so weirdly placed.

Probably has to do with the LED backlighting. If you place it "normally," bottom legends won't get properly lit by the LEDs.

I wonder if they will have better supply with a new model?  I would love a blue shine 2 with black switches but no one has any in stock.  It seems like adding another model will only make that worse...

They are not in stock because they are EoL.

Ah, I didn't realize they were EOL.  I will admit I am new to mechanical keyboards and just didn't realize the models had such a short life (less than a year it looks like)  I am in the US and was referring to a black keybaord with blue lighting.  Though that one with the white keycaps looks pretty neat.  It just wouldn't go with my setup very well.

Then have a look at the links I posted.  They are all MX Black with blue backlighting.
