GMK have the original Cherry Legends.  We are designing a replica set so we can make Cherry Font sets  at SP.

How much money is being spent on this? I think a ton of the real thing could be bought instead with funds. I don't get the reasoning for making poor imitations of Cherry with SP when you can buy real Cherry with GMK. Legends are not the most important attribute of Cherry key and SP is lacking in every respect there.

I posted some details last night.

I considered scrapping the replica project when the GMK news came out, but it has become clear that people still want it to proceed.  Personally, the only real problem I have with SP keys is their sharp spacebar.  Thickness doesn't trouble me one iota.  In fact for tactile switches, I greatly prefer thin keys.  And my impression is that for most of us, the legends are the thing.

Going with SP gives us a ton of flexibility.  We can do lots of smaller GBs for reasonable prices (like we have been doing with the explosion of full-set GBs), rather than one monolithic GB one or twice a year.  If the relationship with GMK continues to develop to the point where our needs and volumes are reasonably met, then I'm all for switching to them as our main manufacturer.  But for now we're better off with SP.

April backspace ordered.

What about the original legend adoption pledges?  No longer needed?

I ask because I am wondering about non-ANSI layouts.  I assume that the funds are budgeted to cover the ANSI 104-key layout.  I wonder if non-ANSI folks might interested in adopting some of the legends to make ISO possible?  That would mean that you guys would have more SVGs to make, so i don't want to sign you up for something you may not have time for right now.

The unexpectedly huge success of the Red Cherry group buy mostly eliminated the need for the adoption pledges.  As fun as it is for people to donate directly and "own" a legend, I think the auction- and GB-based fundraising options are cleaner and faster at raising the money anyway.

I think full regional layouts are best left for another day.  That said, we already have the ISO short left shift -- what other legends are required to make an acceptable ISO universal set?  A 1x backslash I know ... anything else?  I'm not sure what the status of SP's J-shaped Enter key is, and whether we can make legends for it.

Honestly, the roadblock has just been my insufficient amount of time to pursue the effort. The tooling for new molds was already quoted to me, and I posted that in the thread.

What I wanted to do was create a group buy for many of the popular cap sets, and spread the cost of the molds among that. I think it would work out fairly well. Again, just needs me to focus on it...

It's understandable that people don't fully trust gmk yet with the messed up revealing and drama, also the whole SP process seems pretty established by now and you know how inertness works.

However any effort towards SP draws momentum off gmk, but gmk is where it's at.

Outfitting SP now is just conservative, but seeing how fickle people are, especially on spotting a so called vendor, it might be the wiser choice.

gmk is fundamentally limited in what they can produce. they can produce exactly what cherry produced years ago and that's about it. new legend designs, special order colors etc etc are all exponentially more difficult with gmk. firther, their production achedule is highly booked by their main business of keyboard production. there are a multitude of reasons why the community can only benefit from completing this project.

finally, there is absolutely no reason why we can't take advantage of both gmk's vintage tooling and sp's flexibility except that these legends are not currently finished. otherwise, they keys blend quite well and can be mixed and matched to make everyone's personally perfect cap set.

frankly, this has been discussed at length, and no one is forcing you to contribute. however, if you're not wanting to discuss positive progress on this project i would please ask you to refrain from adding to this thread

If you say so... custom colors are effortless at GMK I mean look at what we ordered already... they will order any color of plastic stock you want. New legends are more of an effort, they did say they are willing to make them eventually as I have inquired about having some 'Execute' enter keys and 'Fn' keys in a few sizes made at some point. I only asked a question, and offering a counter argument that I felt that going though a lot of cost and effort to recreate something that already exists and is available seems kind of counter intuitive. I will also argue that SP keycaps DO NOT blend quite well as they have a different profile that is different enough to be noticeable.
The biggest hurdle to using GMK more is their MOQ, granted. However if people just go oh, it's too hard and go with SP we never will be able to take advantage of GMK, and I DESPERATELY want to have alternatives to originative. This replicating made some sense before we knew there was other options, but I still say not so much now that we all know better.
I am tired of the if you have an opinion (or simply state logic) that is different you aren't allowed to speak attitude around here sometimes. Now I have said my piece and that is all.

I'm fine with you voicing your opinion, though it would probably be better suited for the main Cherry Replica thread rather than here.  Like I said before, if we can develop our relationship with GMK such that we can cut new legends and do lower-MOQ orders at reasonable prices (or if we grow to the point that the higher MOQ is not a problem), then I am 100% for doing all our Cherry-type stuff with them.  The original molds are better than the replicas, and always will be.

I don't see the replica project as hindering the growth of the GMK relationship.  The SP legends are only costing us about $4K, which is a fraction of what a full-set order with GMK would cost us with a 400 unit MOQ.  And the bulk of that was raised during the Red Cherry group buy, so it's not like everyone is just shoveling donated money into this.  Nearly all of the funds have been generously exchanged for real goods.

It is true that having "Cherry" legends available at SP will decrease the demand for GMK Cherry sets.  But I think holding off on the SP project for something that may take years with GMK -- or never materialize at all -- is silly.  Affordable full-set group buys with GMK are still tantalizing even if we also have the replica legends with SP.  People will always prefer them, and we should keep working to get them.

Also, you could do a couple of things that GMK can't like PBT DSs. Also, if GBs get to GMK MOQ, you could always transfer the GB from SP to GMK, pending people willing to pay the difference. I sure would.
