Cherry height, dark grey Linux OS key caps
« on: Tue, 07 May 2013, 06:57:47 »
So, after many months lurking around, I decided to make my first post, since I bought my first mechanical keyboard.  :)
I'm from Portugal, and around here there are only a couple of mechanical keyboards with PT layout, but I don't really like their design, and I'm not really a gamer. After lurking around Portuguese forums and 2nd hand sale sites, I found a PT-layout Cherry G80-3000, with beige/grey keycaps at a good price.

Now, since I'm a Linux user, I'd love to get rid of the Windows OS keycaps this keyboard comes with. I was thinking about buying a couple form WASDkeyboards (like a good noob), but I have some problems:
- Will the WASDkeyboards dark grey color match the rest of my dark grey keycaps?
- Since these keycaps are taller than Cherry's, can I sand their bottoms to try and match the correct height?

I don't know if any of you ever had these kind of problems, so any advice is greatly appreciated. I also can't find any other place that sells dark grey OS keycaps.

In the end I could just try to use a solvent to erase the Windows logo from the keycaps, but I don't know if that would work either.

Why not buy a set of blank modifiers to fill the bottom row? Then you don't have to look at the logos at all.

That could be an option, is there any place where I can buy those dark grey with cherry height?

You could try hunting for a set of Imsto Cherry PBT grey blanks. But it wouldn't be easy to just buy the mods, you'd prolly need to buy the whole set. But those caps are really nice, I highly recommend that set. They would look something like Jocelyn's Poker. I have a set of them but they're blue. Check the FC700R review or the Projects/Reviews/Wishlist link in my signature to see pictures of it.

Thanks, I guess I have to explore the vendor forums a bit more.

If you have any further questions, you should also check out the Simple Questions, Simple Answers thread to see if someone else has already asked a question you might have. You're also more than welcome to post in that thread as well and someone will probably get back to you quickly.

I will be offering dyesubs PBT winkey replacement with not Windows logo in new groupbuy. I try to have the thread up in groubpuy section sometime today.

Imsto gray caps are not very "dark" imo. I'd call them medium gray if anything.

Edit - What you're looking for does not yet exist. A lot of people, myself included, are also waiting for something like this to be made.

I suppose so. It's a pity I couldn't find a Cherry G80-3000 in black (although I prefer beige/grey like the one I bought, and with PT layout it probably doesn't even exist), because I could buy one of these instead (I'm assuming they have the correct cherry height).
