G80-1000HDD clarification help needed
« on: Sat, 11 May 2013, 08:42:44 »
Hi, just got myself a G80-1000HDD/01 on eBay (German layout). I suppose it will have standard black switches. I ask myself why they dont declare it as HAD then? Where are the differences? From the picture I can tell that it doesn't have a date code, just a 4 digit serial number and that's it. Also, this version is not included in the "known-version"-list of the deskthority wiki (though I know this probably doesn't mean much).
Well I bet you can help me with that, I should get this thing around 16-17th of May and then I can also post pictures and stuff. At the moment I'm just curious. :)

I think I found the ebay listing for it, it is a really old one made sometime before 1989 since it has the made in W. Germany old style label. I guess it is missing from the model codes wiki since no one had one before. Will be interesting to see what difference can be found that makes it a D.

Yep, here's the listing so you other guys don't have to search all day: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Commodore-Cherry-Tastatur-/281102789473?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&clk_rvr_id=478336735098&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=QRcbWifTY08gdlmMWAhpbmv%252BB3Y%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Somewhere I read something about a MX Superblack in connection with the "HDD" code, but I'm pretty suspicious, I think it's pretty unprobable there is really a Superblack on my G80-1000. I will definetly report as soon as I get that thing, but please also make other suggestions here ;)

MX Superblack in connection with the "HDD" code
No, MX Super Blacks only appear on a handful of keyboards, notably the G80-2100, G80-1600 and the G80-5000.

Cherry isn't very consistent with some of their catalog codes.

I just got the keyboard in the mail today, and it's one nice old piece of hardware.^^ The switches are black of course (grey one on space), and I think they feel a bit different to the standard blacks I have on my G80-1800, 1851 and 3000 (might also be that I'm just spoiled by the white clicky ALPS on my AEK2 in the last weeks). And besides, there are also quite a few differences to the G80-1000HFD with blues that I already have. The case and PCB differ slightly, for example the PCB on the 1000HDD is glued to the frontside of the case. You can just unscrew the 4 screws and take off the backside, but no chance on the front there.^^ Didn't want to damage it either.
You might have noticed, this thing didn't have a date code. I looked it up, and really, according to this article on deskthority: [http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_date_codes], they started with the date codes in year 1988. The letter A would be 1988 then.
I took off the back and saw a date in it, here's a pic:

Hard to see, but it says 7.1.1988. On the inner frontside, there is another date which says 18.12.1987 (sorry for the bad pic btw). I will post more if I can figure out how I have to connect my digicam to my PC, don't have a CF card reader and never did it with this USB cable. :D

So, I got myself a cherry keyboard which is 6 and a half years older than I am myself (had my 20th birtyday yesterday, this makes a good present :P). And, considering it's more than 26 years old, it's in excellent condition. Doubleshots still look good, rubber stoppers on the back are all there (they also look different from my other G80-1000), every key works perfectly I think, and it's not even very dirty or yellowed. Doubleshots from the Num block even look like they weren't used at all.

So long guys :)
