Most of web-enabled reporting tools I sell require a Java 6 runtime environment on the client side (browser plugin).  Java 6.0 is available from Sun for Linux and the nasty.  However, java dev and releases for OS X are controlled by Apple.  

Apple did release Java 6, but only a 64-bit version.  And there are NO 64-bit browsers currently available for OS X.  Thus, we are stuck at Java 5 for web-enabled applications.

Which means, I have to launch a linux VM whenever I need to access any of these web tools (which is a PITA).  Maybe a switch back to linux on a thinkpad is in order...

What are you running OSX on?  I thought you were Apple free at the moment?

Current gen blackbook
 - 2.4Ghz C2D CPU
 - 4GB ram
 - 320GB hdd

BTW, there are SEVERAL mentions of my fairly new Macbook in IM conversations between us (just looked at some recent transcripts).  ;)

I use a streamlined version of XP SP2.  I used nlite to remove all the stuff that comes with it that I'll never use.  As a result, I got a really fast OS that runs everything.  Including my favorite... games!  :)

No OS is the best one for me.

My server runs Ubuntu 7.10 (IIRC,) my Mac runs OS X 10.5.2 (haven't applied all the updates, m'kay?,) and my ThinkPad runs XP Tablet SP2 (again, haven't applied all the updates...)

Linux on Thinkpad here and I can't live without it! Plus through Lenovo you avoid paying the M$ tax (their linux machines actually are cheaper, unlike other people). Everything works like a charm, very well supported (under Ubuntu right now).

Desktop also runs linux of course :)

I really prefer the touchpad to the tracking point (but then again I also prefer a numpad ;)) Most of the time I have a small logitech nano that I use, and an external board with the laptop on a stand.

To be fair, Apple's touchpads are actually quite decent.

(But, I'd STILL rather have a TrackPoint. Which is part of the reason I usually use my EnduraPro with my iBook.)

Of course, the most flimsy way to get a pointing stick not built into a laptop would probably be the UltraNav IV keyboard (which does also have a touchpad.) Either that, or the IBM Model M4 or Unicomp Mighty Mouse.

Versus a crappy Cirque Easy Cat (probably the most flimsy way to get a standalone touchpad?) I think the keyboard would quickly destroy the touchpad. ;)
