Filco Majestouch-2 with damage should I still buy?
« on: Sun, 02 June 2013, 21:38:40 »
I found a Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry MX Brown Switches. The only problem is that the left shift and left control keys are loose (shown in the picture that was given).

Should I still buy it, and is it possible to be fixed within a timely and cost efficient manner?

The left control key switch looks like it is coming off of the keyboard. Would it be fixable/hard to fix?

Maybe if I add a picture...

Can anyone tell me what might have to be done to fix it. The description says that these two keys are "loose". The housing looks damaged on the left ctrl key, but is that fixable without soldering?

You could bodge it with glue or something but it would be best if you could desolder the switch and replace it. If you don't mind me asking how much is it selling for?

unless it was very much cheaper than retail, wouldn't recommend buying it unless you're confident of fixing it - the proper fix would require you to desolder the entire board to fix that switch on the ctrl. the glue thing is possible, but its not a guaranteed fix, and it'll likely be very messy.

only need to desolder the ctrl switch to fix it, not the entire board

He would not need to desolder the whole board. Only the single damaged switch.

Thanks guys! As I am new to mechanical keyboards this helps. I don't think I will buy this as I have never soldered before, and I probably won't have the money to get good soldering tools (I saw a video of a guy doing a ergo-clear mod and he said the cheap soldering equipment isn't worth it... for the job).

You can do it with a cheap soldering iron fine. You don't need good equipment.

There is always a chance that the PCB is damaged, depending on how this switch was massacred.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You can still mount the switch to the plate, and solder some wires directly to the switch where the traces on the PCB would have been. I would say go for it.

Debating about this still actually even though I said I might not get it. If I can find someone that could fix it than I might try doing that. This is the cheapest (except for bidding) that I could get a Filco Majestouch with brown switches...
I'm a broke as hell college student and this is the last thing I could treat myself to lol.

Better to buy a Filco Majestouch (older) or something that isn't damaged like that. The fact that some keys have been damaged in that way suggests accidents or abuse may have happened. Keys don't just pop up with time and age, especially when you consider Majestouch 2 is a 2 year old model.

That is something to consider. I am messaging the guy and he tells me that the keys just keep falling off. He didn't answer whether the switches work or not. I might pass on this and just try and win this bid (81-85 plus a 23 dollar shipping if I do win...still way cheaper than buying it off ebay), or just ordering the Leopold Tenkeyless Browns. Either way I am going to buy keycaps (don't know whether I will go all white blank or all black blank...both look pretty sexy). I just won't have the funds for a Filco off of Amazon.

Also, a little heads up on EK about not having Leopold's with blank keys in various switches...they are releasing a bundle that comes with blank keys; however, they are going to be $15-30 dollars more than the $99.00 models...cheaper than buying separate caps off a site like wasd...but seriously!? They better be PBT....

Anyway...thoughts on my plan?

seriosuly, why don't you just take a new, on warranty coolermaster or rosewill? maybe not such sexy brands, but you'd be saved a lot of trouble and uncertainty
