Looking for a new mouse -
« on: Wed, 05 June 2013, 01:24:00 »
I'm currently in the market for a new mouse, I've been using a Logitech Mx518 for a really long time now.
I've always liked the clicks on this mouse if that means anything. Does anyone have experience with the CM Storm? http://www.cmstore-usa.com/recon-gaming-mouse-with-4000-dpi-optical-sensor-and-multicolor-leds/ and the 2013 Deathadder? http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-deathadder. The only thing I don't really like about Razer products is I tend to hear about the durability being quite bad...I don't rage, but I game quite a lot, and I don't want to have to get a new mouse 2 months down the line.

What's the problem with the MX518? If they were still making those, I'd probably take that over most other mice.

An updated version is the G400s. I have the DA 2013, and it's a rock solid mouse. Great sensor and build quality.

It also depends on what the primary use of the mouse is going to be. Are you going to be playing lots of FPS games? Then you want something optical, like the G400s, the Zowie FK/AM, or the Razer DA 2013. Otherwise, go with the mouse that has the features you want/need.

+1 to this.

You should also consider the shape/ergonomics of the mouse. It would be good if you could go into a store and feel the mouse in your hands as well.

If you like the shape of the MX518, then the G400(s) is an obvious choice. It has a better sensor than the MX518 and it is one of the best bang for buck mice in the sense that it is affordable, yet one of the best mice currently on the market. If the shape works for you that is.

I think the Death adders are great mice as well, but the form factor is a lot different. About the durability, I am not so sure, though I have had people I know complain about the scroll wheel malfunctioning over time. But then again, the scroll wheel seems to be the weak point of most mice and tends to be the first thing that breaks. If you like the shape and sensor, it would not be enough for me not to get the mouse. If you are looking for a similar shape and a decent sensor, then the Zowie EC1 Evo is an alternative you could go for.

The Cooler Master Storm Spawn has a decent sensor, but there have been firmware issues. You would have to check whether previous problems have been fixed before getting it. It also has kind of a unique shape that might not work for everyone.

Another shape of mice I want to throw into the mix is the simple ambidextrous one reminiscent of mice like the WMO 1.1. They are sometimes overlooked since they do not look ergonomic, but for a lot of people they are more comfortable to use than a lot of these oddly shaped mice. They are also generally a lot lighter than ergonomic mice, which is a good thing. I am a big fan of the Steelseries Sensei shape, but sensor wise would prefer to go with the Zowie FK. But that is just my 2 cents.

Razer mice, at least the newer ones, are fairly solid built. And their problem hasn't really been poor durability, it's been poor quality control. So yeah, that might be something of the same, but if you get a properly built one(which isn't that hard, really) it'll be fairly durable.

But yeah, like Grim Fandango said; if you really liked the MX518 shape then the G400/s is the way to go. If you want something different and won't be doing very serious FPS gaming, you could get the G500/s as that's got the same shape but with a few more bells and whistles. Logitech mice also feel more solid than most other mice I've tried, so if you're going to be doing a lot of heavy gaming I think sticking with Logitech is a decent option. They've also got great customer support from what I've heard and somewhat experienced.

I have heard good things about the cm storm recon in reviews but if you really like the mx518 the G400 is the safest bet although the G400 I bought was far worse than an mx518 that I found at a friends (clicks and scroll wheel)...Could just be an oddity though.

You might also look into the roccat savu that mouse also gets good press usually.

@stingrae: You probably got one of the earlier models that had problems (prediction I think?). I have one of those too, and am seriously interested in replacing it with a newer G400s.

Same, but atm I'd like to get a DA 2013 before I get a new G400s to replace my gen1 G400.

Have you tried contacting Logitech and see whether you can have it exchanged for a new one ? ( Might be a long shot , but who knows)

Unfortunately I didn't purchase it from Logitech, but traded my MX518 for it (whoops). No biggie.

As suggested, the G400S and the G500 (and so on) are good mice. Love my G500.

Any recommendations for a large/heavy gaming mouse?  I've had an older Razer unit for years, and although it's been rock solid in construction, it is a little smaller than I would prefer.  Are the various R.A.T. models the way to go?

(Hopefully this is on-topic for the thread!)

I play a lot of Fps and Moba. While I've loved this Mx518 for so long, I've just started really realizing how much I don't like "glossy" surfaces; also just want to try to find that "upgraded" feel to me.

I had a mx510,mx518,g5,g500. I just went through about 8 mice. I kept the g500s. it is probably not the best for fps games. really though few play at that level even though maybe they think they do. it fits my hand the best. ambi mice do not work for me. the big thing that matters to me on the g500/s-g700/s is the free wheel that no one else seems to have. the downside is it will rattle if you whip it around. however I took apart the g500 and these mice are well built. the wheel assy is all metal and it had Omron japan.

the only thing is where I rest my wrist always got slightly sore with these mice. I have tried many wrist rests that made it much worse. I think I will put a qck under my fav mouse rug.

oh, I see the op plays fps. many people say the g500s sensor is in the wrong place. I think your obvious choice is the g400s. it is the same shape as the mx510-18. of course the g500s/g700s do more stuff and the g500s has weights.

one thing I wanted to mention. Logitech mice automatically focus to your surface(aka lift) and it works 9 times out of 10. other mice require you to set that. that may offer better tuning or it may not work at all. in my case those did not work at all.

Thanks for your comment, appreciate it. I believe a buddy of mine has the G500, so I may go mess around with it for a bit, but the G400 does seem like its winning me over more so far. As for weights in the g500, its meh, I kind of like the weight of the Mx518, and I'm assuming the G400 is closest to it.

Greystone: For a heavier mouse, I haven't tried any of the Madcatz RAT mice, but I can definitely recommend the Logitech G700s. It is wireless, yet, the battery that is needed provides the extra heft. I thought I would be bothered by it, but not so much anymore.

To the OP: If you're looking for an "upgraded" feeling mouse, then you should definitely consider a G700s... if budget permits. It's a $100 mouse.

I have tried a bunch of mice; the G9x, Razer Taipan, Steel Series Sensei, G400, Razer Deathadder, and while I can't definitively say the G700s is the best out of these... I definitely like the G700s a lot. It is the one I've decided to keep after having used all those other mice.

Certainly, in terms of build quality it is the best. People have complained about the sort-of cheap feeling of the extra side buttons, but the mouse's body shell is absolutely rock solid. And is the sturdiest of all the mice I've tried.

I own an MX518, it's a piece of ****...

A Razer Imperator 4G is my current mouse, the only rival to it is a Microsoft Trackball Optical (Which I will be modding to 8200 DPI).

Whether you should go for the g500,  or those heavier mice with tons of features in general kind of depends on your intended use.  For example,  if you are a hardcore fps player,  playing things like Counter Strike Source,  then it is hard to recommend the RAT7, or anything which uses the philips twin eye sensor.  I also feel like added weights are gimmicky.  The G500 already weighs a ton even without the additional weight.  You generally do not see mice like that used competitively. Other things you might not like about the g500 is the location of the sensor, and the scroll wheeel.  Though of course partly subjective.

On the other hand,  if other features are important to you (like extra buttons) , and if it feels good to you, go for it. Just do yourself a favor and also have a look at the simpler lighter optical mice.  They may surprise you. Remember that when it comes to mice,  more is not always better.

I think the sensor and it's location on the g500-g700 is not for a pro. how many of you are pros? anyways I am not even using it for games at all. I find the g700s has too many buttons in my way. this is a matter of personal preference. again, because not most people are pro gamers. I mean fps. if you are playing mmorpg the g700s may be right up your alley. or even the corsair m95.

You could always build your own mouse with an 8200 DPI Avago ADNS-9800, some microswitches, and a teensy -> http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44411.0

actually I was thinking of gutting a g500s and putting it in the m570. that would be what I really like I think. the problem is if you do not get it in just the right place it won't work very good. otherwise any trackball save for the lst is too slow for me. the lst is too big for me. besides with a ball on top I am moving my wrist anyways. I do not see how that helps rsi. or maybe I will put the 9800 in a mx510. I like the g500s but for the long run if I stick with a mouse I like the mx510 body better. of course getting the better wheel in there should be  a hack job. not every one thinks that wheel is better though but I do. then again I could just get a g400s which has a better sensor altogether.
