Hot Or Not?
« on: Sat, 15 June 2013, 19:40:45 »
Recently, I have been looking at getting a keyboard with Cherry MX Clear switches and I have found 1 keyboard that is both available to me and of decent quality. :)

It is a Ducky DK9008G2 PRO Grey Version.

Link: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=466]

I think it looks rather generic and boring. I was wondering what other thought about it. Quality over looks? Looks over quality? or should I be looking at a different board?

Edit: Does anyone know where I can buy a pre-modded ergoclear board?

Have you considered the Leopold FC660M with clears? Qtan has them. I ordered one from him and I like it a lot.

As opposed to the other DK9008G2 PROs, like the version with thin, ninja print PBT keycaps that came with the MX Greens, the mixed linear one with MX Red/Black/Greys, etc. these come with thick PBT dyesubs ... They're simple (or plain) looking without all the flashy LEDs that come with SHINEs. That's pretty much it.

There's nothing wrong with Ducky quality except for problematic boards they released some several years ago.

These are completely new revamped G2PRO boards with thick, dyesubbed PBT keycaps, and available in 7 (of 9 available) switch types. The cases seem a bit different in the photos so Ducky might have produced a newer case mold.

There are two other keycap colors available: Grey and Blue mods, and White and Grey mods, but only with the standard Blue/Red/Brown/Black switches. Dark Greys will be even tougher to actuate than Blacks.

Product-wise, getting high quality PBT keycaps and wide switch choice makes these the best Cherry MX board available.

Ducky released some XM ALPS clones boards which are generally considered terrible. Build quality among those boards are lower. The DK2108 Zero series is their successor; not completely sure how the new build quality compares. Ducky Shine Is DK9008 had LED annoyances which were corrected for the Shine IIs.

There's a few old threads discussing Ducky DK1008 quality:

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33327.0

Those keyboards are well in the past now.

However, consider that Ducky has been changing, improving and releasing keyboards at an extremely rapid rate. These G2 PRO thick PBT boards were announced earlier this year and are finally coming to the US, but Ducky already has a new lineup as announced at Computex.

No, MX Clears.

Only MX Whites on a Ducky are the Shine 78 version.

Uh, I'm pretty sure mine has MX Whites. Check https://www.teraset.net/ducky.php and ctrl+f mx white and you'll find it... I ordered mine from here: http://www.netonnet.se/art/dator/kringutrustning/speltillbehor/mekaniska-tangentbord/ducky-g2prodyesubpbtmxwhite/188139.6061/ and it says it has MX White. Don't make preassumptions about things you don't know, "jabar".

However, this keyboard doesn't seem to be available in the US yet. You can order it from Teraset if you live inside the EU but otherwise you'll just have to wait.
