What do you listen to?
« on: Wed, 19 June 2013, 03:48:33 »
Greetings everyone,
recently I've been solving my PC audio set up. With great help from you I managed to figure it out. When the time is right, I'm going to buy FiiO E10 USB DAC and Sennheiser HD518 headphones. Pretty entry level stuff, but for me it is luxury beyond measure.

I have seen many of your PC setups with DACs, AMPs, expensive headphones etc., so my question to you guys is, what do you listen to?

We have a music thread where you can see what people's musical tastes are. I believe it is called "What are you listening to now" in the off-topics forum.

But to answer your question, I'm a heavy metal and hardcore fan. I listen to some hip-hop and electronic stuff as well but my true love is heavy music.

Edit: The thread I was referring to was this one.

I listen to drum & bass and dubstep mainly. I steer completely clear of the new styles and stick to the roots (concentration on drums, more calm, ambient noises and deep, heavy basslines - no wobs, no obnoxious noises and definitely no skrillex etc.). For example Dread by Kahn or Temperance by Marcus Intalex. Generally the heavier, darker and more powerful the better although I do listen to lighter, more soulful stuff like Calibre.

I stay away from other types of electronic music for the most part because I find it quite weak for lack of a better word (of course there are a few exceptions e.g Daft Punk). I also listen to other music like rock but only very few songs.

I use Monitor Audio R252s with a NAD 3130 when I have the house to myself but use Sennheiser PC 350s with the NAD when people are around.

Nice :) And when you listen to music, what format, bitrate and origin is it? I myself download mp3s in 320 kbps. When I was younger, I had couple of albums (downloaded) in ogg. Now I listen only to singles, many genres, but I became fond of indie music.

But call me a hipster and I wil rip out your spine ;)

FLACs most of the time. It's probably a bit of a placebo but I've got in the habit of using them over MP3s.

Avant-garde and psychedelic jazz and rock from the 1960s-70s is my main passion.

Traditional blues, minimalist music, 1980s "new wave" and (mostly modern) classical fills in around the edges.

My digital collection is .MP3 in the 192-320 range, but, since I am an old man, I probably can't realistically hear anything beyond what 192 can provide.

I once downloaded FLAC discography ov Beatles for my dad, but I had to download them again in mp3, because his phone didnť play FLAC :D (Sony Ericsson C903).

And what media player do you use the most? I tried Foobar 2000, but didn't quite "get it"...

If its digital media on my computer its usually FLAC/WAV/PCM on Foobar2k. Usually 16 bit 44100 HZ or 48000 HZ sample rate and 1411 kbps to upwards of 1965 kbps bitrate. I use a sabre D18 based DAC and a violectric v200 amp with my LCD2's or a Woo Audio WA3 tube amp with a pair of Beyer DT990-600's.

I can find enjoyment in almost all genres of music nowadays

I use foobar. Many people customise it but I prefer the very simple stock theme.

I tend to stick with Dub, D&B, electronica, 80's retro pop (empire of the sun, Imagine Dragons, etc..) and old school hip hop (wu-tang, de la soul, etc..).  I usually just turn on Pandora and stick with an Imagine Dragons channel or a Cotti and Cluekid channel.

I am with Photeq in that I much prefer the darker themed stuff, but I actually like the wub, wub, wub, but can't really get into the newer stuff like Skrillix.

I listen on some daytons powered by a Lepai 2020i getting signal from an Asus Xonar DS, or some Audio Technica ATH AD500s.  For the dubstep I use some JVC HA-RX500s.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

I use Spotify or the Zune software. My MP3s are 192 kbps - 320kbps. Most of the stuff I've been listening to recently have been ripped from CDs or 320 kbps from Spotify since I pay for that.

Recently I have gotten a bit attached to MOG.com streaming music service.  It streams in 320kbps and all of their songs sound beautiful.  It's been the first time in a long time I've spent the time to listen to music and make a rockin playlist.  Mostly because there's so much to choose from.

I'm using google play music for streaming.  It's pretty decent, streaming quality is 320kbps (even on my mobile); there are a few holes in the selection, but for the most part I can find what I want to listen to.  What am I listening to right now?  Thought for Food by The Books.

Music streaming is a problem in my country, either it's paid (heavily) or region locked.

I hated Foobar2000  for not being able to build a muci library. Is there other media player which allows you to make a library from your folders with different albums. You just open this player and you see all your albums, it syncs immediately when you add new album to the folder (ID3 tags) and has preset equalizers? I used to have dozens of downloaded albums, but I wasn't so aware of modern technologies and software solutions, so I deleted them all and started to listen to singles.

Right now I'm listening to Linkin Park - Castle of Glass.

I am a REALLY old man.

I don't know what libraries and playlists are.

My collection is arranged on my hard drive pretty much the same way my LPs and CDs are arranged on my shelves - Genre / Artist / Date.

Likewise, that is how I play them - one song or album at a time. I have no idea what I will want to listen to a half-hour from now.

Since the size is so large (approx 270GB) I feel the need to be very careful and picky about organization. So, for example, I recently went to E:\MP3 Music Collection\Blues\Howlin Wolf\1958 Moanin in the Moonlight\103 - Smokestack Lightning, right-clicked, and selected "Play"

Nothing else makes sense to me.

You Sir are truly a proffesional ;) I am 25 and my music collection has never been bigger than 3 GB. Right now I'm doing this just like you, except my latest playlist has only 27 songs in it.

It's the set of songs I have stored in my phone and I listen to them when I'm running. Don't worry, I use basic HTC headphones, which are pips, not plugs ;) I can hear bicycles even when they are 5 meters behind me ;) Even my footsteps are louder than my music.

Don't like streaming. Too limited a selection.

I keep flacs and some mp3s on my media drive (a terrabyte drive in my laptop, primary is an ssd) and play them with ncmcpp, an mpd frontend.

Most of the artists I listen to are russian (some modern rap and soviet era rock), so I can't type the names with my keyboard. I can copy/paste them later if anyone cares. Plus a couple smaller artists and a couple english (as in england) socialists.

I live in a post communist country. We are democratic but there was an incident in high politics and there might be early election and we might become communist after all :D I'm not even mad, right handed politics didn't do anything but greed.

Well, sound like some very slow SKA to me and I hate SKA. Many people (almost all) of them who smokes weed (ganja) also listen to SKA and with the connection between those two I just can't be anything but freakin' mad when I hear anything SKA-like :D

I like singles with electronic or dubstep fragments - Imagine Dragons - Radioactive; Linkin Park - Burn it down and so one. Also remixes and OST from games - Neil Davidge - Nemesis (Alvin Risk remix) etc...

I donwload only MP3 in 320 kbps.

I am sorry that sounds like SKA to you.  I also dislike ska.  Maybe you would like something like Aphex Twin, Dillinger Escape Plan, or Rob/White Zombie

Slow music is not always bad though :)

I don't like slow music, except Imagine Dragons.

I'm generally quite eclectic and most of the time have all my music on shuffle - which can get a little embarrassing at times... Dawsons Creek Sound Track I'm looking at you!  At this precise moment time it's some James but I keep my music organised in more or less the same fashion as fohat.digs (we've moved onto Placebo now) so that when I'm in the mood for something I can effortlessly drift to where I want to go.  My music lives mostly on CD and an unRaid-ed HP micro-server and generally gets played either completely randomly through my PC (The Sensational Alex Harvey Band) or one CD at a time.  I've just built myself a 5V supply ('cause hay, why not!) for a Raspberry Pi which'll be running RaspyFi outputting to an oDAC then feeding to my amp-et-all.  The plan is further to add a CDRW and have it rip CD's to the server - it's in the case of a NAD C520 (early Ministry) and I'd like to get the fascia controls and display working using the GPIOs or a shield, but that's more a long term thing...

I'm basically an industrial (Chimaira) metal kind of guy, with leanings towards the late romantics, and a bit of (almost - please no cheesy pop) everything in-between.

If they are available to you, pirate bay and kick ass torrents seem to have a lot of good stuff.

I have been purchasing recorded music for almost half a century, and have spent a ludicrous amount of money on it.

Ripping LPs as well as CDs has been the overwhelming bulk source of my collection, but I have downloaded a moderate amount of music from "gray areas" in recent years. Since I am "lost in the past" I have little interest in contemporary music, so I would not be doing anything to support the current music industry anyway.

My wife and daughter, on the other hand, use iTunes to keep up with what is hot now, so they are supporting artists who are active today.
