das 3: problem with KVM
« on: Sat, 06 September 2008, 10:03:34 »
Hi,

Since a few days I'm the happy owner of a Das Keyboard III which I use at work. Haven't worked with such a nice keyboard since my IBM XT days!

Anyway, ofcourse I now want something nice at home too, and recently I took the Das3 home, only to find out it doesn't work with my Aten CS62DU ( http://www.aten.com/products/productItem.php?pcid=2005010513171002&psid=20070130114323002&pid=20070420164543001&layerid=subClass3 ) .

That is, it works fine in the "mouse" port of the switch, but not at all in the "keyboard" port. All 3 leds light up, and that's it.

Because I'm looking for nice keyboard for use at home, I'm wondering why this could be. If I spent yet another 100-200$ on a keyboard, I'd like it to work with my switch..

The Aten has a feature (which I like a lot) that you can switch inputs using the scroll-lock key. Is it the built-in hub in the Das3 interfering, or is it something else?

Anyone any clue?

TIA,
 Rick

I have an issue with my HHKB Pro 2 and an IOGear KVM as well.  (it also has a built-in USB port)

Is this a PS/2 KVM you are using an adapter with?  Or a USB one?  (mine's USB)

BTW, welcome to geekhack!

Who here is able to use a keyboard with built-in USB hub successfully with a USB KVM?

I suspect a push button KVM might work fine.

I see the same behavior with my HHKB that rickk sees with his DAS3.  I can use it if I plug it into the mouse usb port on the KVM...but am unable to switch between systems.  I can, however, plug another USB keyboard (without hub) into the keyboard USB port and switch without issue (pretty much ANY USB or PS/2 w/ adapter keyboard I have that doesn't have a built-in hub).

I don't have a kvm, but my desktop has an older kernel, and I've had problems with both the HHKB Pro and the Das III hanging on me after a little while (maybe 10 minutes) or so.  I suspect this is due to the usb hub, none of my other usb/ps2/adb boards have this problem.

This box is running PCLinuxOS, in Ubuntu I never have this problem.

I have a ps/2 4 port KVM, with 3 usb ports on it(they are not console usb ports though)
I can plug in a usb drive into the port on the HHKB and it is detected no problem.

I tried a usb to ps/2 converter to get the HHKB on the console port but it does not work.

Disable USB hub?
« Reply #6 on: Sat, 08 November 2008, 04:38:52 »
Hi,

I have exactly the same problem; brand new Das III with Aten CS62DU, also new. I'm VERY disappointed about this, since they clearly state "compatible with KVM switches" on their website.

I was wondering, since it seems the problem lies with the internal USB hub of the Das III, could there be some way to disable it?

I'm afraid not actually - the Das website mentions clearly that you shouldn't try to open the enclosure because it would break for sure.

Hope someone has an idea. Otherwise I'm gonna return it, I guess.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to geekhack Unimatrix01!

It is speculation about the USB hub at this point, but it makes since considering I have the same prob with my HHKB Pro 2 (w/ built in USB hub).  All my other USB keyboards work fine on my IOGear KVM...including my SMK-88, which doesn't have a USB hub, but a pass-through USB connection on a separate USB cable.
