Ducky 9008G2 pro vs. Shine 3?!?!?
« on: Fri, 12 July 2013, 14:50:30 »
So Im in pickle.. just got the Ducky dk9008g2 pro. with the dark gray/blue PBT keycaps in mx blues.  And i absolutely love it.  the feel and sound of the thick plastic, the color, everything..   The only thing is that i really want/need LED backlit; my room is very dark at night  So i am really thinking of returning this and waiting for the shine 3... but its so hard.  im in love with the keyboard already..

only if they had PBT with LED backlit keys

i dont know what to do and i thought i would ask the fellow geeks...

Go with the Shine 3, the Pro's selling point is mainly the thicker than normal pbt caps. If you go shine 3 you can eventually buy keycaps, PBT its possible but inefficient to make transparent keycaps, but POM has many transparent keys and the feel is debatably the same if not better than pbtl.

Okay, here's the point blank deal:

If you don't need backlighting and prefer a lighter typing action, DK9008G2.
If you need backlightingbut prefer a heavier typing action, Shine 3.

PBT backlit keys are not going to happen any time soon. But the weight of the PBT dye-subs Ducky made is extremely high, giving the DK9008G2 PBTs a significantly lighter action and lower noise than regular PBTs. ABS is lighter still, so action goes up. The Blues will absolutely feel heavier on the Shine 3 relative to the DK9008G2.
Source: me. And my DK9008G2 PBT MX Greens. And complete sets of ABS, Super-Thick ABS Double-Shots, PBT (t's group buy leftovers), and Ducky PBT dye-subs.

I believe these are :

But the seller is a vendor here and offers 10% off that cost, so find geek_feng,

They are translucent, I'm sure there are many other keycaps out there, but those were the ones I personally was looking at.

As for California wise, i think the internet is the best way to get a hold of these, not really any specialty shops and I live in both Nor/So

Umm... just curious, but wouldn't someone who wants back lighting for being able to type in the dark need key caps with visible legends on them? Not trying to be an @$$ here, I just want to make sure we understand OP's need so we can properly advise--I'm a touch typist, so I don't really get the love for back lit boards.

Mstspawkl, am I right that you want legends on your backlit board? If so, you may need to keep the stock caps on a Shine III, since there are few if any options for aftermarket backlit caps. Personally, that wouldn't bother me since I'm not a huge cap collector, but it's worth keeping it in mind if it's important to you.

Yeah, i prefer to have the legends.  I was expecting something else when he was recommending POM.  But Thank you anyway.  I will return this keyboard and wait for the shine 3.  Thanks Everyone.

Is it really worth the extra ~$40?

Oh the rainbow keys were my own preference. I'm sure black w/ legends and somewhat transparent do exist. >.> even when I showed my friends they mocked me.

Did you already return this? My next purchase might be this keyboard. I love the feel of PBT and blue MX is my favorite switch. I'm also torn between this and the Shine 3, but I'm not really sure I need a backlight. There is a 10% restocking fee with a $9 flat fee for their original shipping - are you interested in selling it instead of returning?

Sorry to bump an old thread.

The love for backlight doesn't just come from the fact that we need to look at the keycaps while typing--I don't, as I also touch-type fine.  But I love the gentle aura of color around my caps with backlit keyboards.  I normally have my Ducky Shine on the lowest backlight setting, and the soft purple glow between the caps and reflecting of the silver-painted case sides is very nice.

Anyway, OP: you probably can't go wrong with either one.  Not sure what you ended up doing, but you probably have a great keyboard regardless :)

This is true, I *love* the backlight on the Shine 3. I might just go ahead and get me one. I'm saving my pennies and nickels. :)

Ok..so I'm kinda in the same position as author of this thread. I want either Ducky DK9008G2 Pro with PBT caps (when I saw dark gray with blue combo I almost fell from the chair) or a Ducky Shine II/III. Both will come with Browns I guess. For a first mech keyboard I think they will be ok since I use the keyboard like 60% for typing (programming to be exact) and rest is games.

Now the question. Is backlight really worth it or not. I do feel that it's just a gimmick and not a game changer really..but on the other hand it does look so freaking awesome! :) Price is fairly the same, at least with Shine II, so no significant difference here.

Other thing that is problematic for me is shipping. Well..I'm not living in US so this gets tough. I wrote to mechanicalkeyboards.com and got answer that shipping to Poland will cost around 55$..so almost 1/3 of the keyboard..awesome..

So I started to look for alternatives. I can get a CM Storm QuickFire Rapid or TK here with Browns, but both are TKL and since I will use this keyboard only at home I won't benefit much from the smaller size in terms of portability. So more reasonable is to get full keyboard I guess. I know they have XT, Trigger and Pro, but I'm not convinced to those for some reason. Maybe I just like the Ducky colors and was reading your opinions million times :) There is also Filco that I try to get somewhere with more reasonable shipping costs maybe (keyboardco.com for example).

Also there is case of stabilizers, Costar vs Cherry ones. Though I think I probably won't feel and be able tell the difference since this will be my first mechanical keyboard. So I guess this is not a point for or against any of the options.
in flames we trust..

Ahh, damn! I'm looking to get either the Shine 3 with MX blues or the Corsair Vengeance K70 with blues. I think I decided I need a backlight too. I really do like the look and feel of PBT over ABS though.
