New Design 60% keyboard frame---original design
« on: Sat, 13 July 2013, 02:46:51 »

Hi, I'm a keyboard fan from Taiwan :)
Very pleased to come here to share with you information about the keyboard design

I designed a new keyboard frame KBC60%
I hope to share in GH60,But I did not GH60  :-[

Refer to my previous design

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=16289.msg312979#msg312979

Design Focus:

a.Clamshell storage space, can be placed MINI USB cable, easy to carry out
60% of the keyboard to go out quite easily, if the USB cable can be incorporated in the function of adding even

more ideal. It can be forget to bring the USB cable out to avoid the dilemma.

b.Use ABS material, to achieve lightweight design

c. Hight of the Keyboard can be adjust
I always liked adjustable keyboard, if they can add this features it would be ideal.
I am a industrial designer, so I am quite familiar with the product design process

After I use 3D graphics software, the 3D rendering completed in full accordance with the ratio of 1:1
And in the frame I want to add functionality.
This is a 3D drawing final look, I have considered the feasibility of the die mold. This is certainly not problem.

I will start making sample
continue to share after completion

The bottom looks like a cyborg case :)

Very cool. Although, don't finalize the exact USB hole location and standoffs until we finalize and test our final prototype GH60 PCB and plate. The exact locations are ever so slightly off from pokers and pure. Ideally, you want a case to fit both.

I'll gladly test one out with a Pure and GH60 PCB for you ;)

Interesting concept.  I like the storage space for the cable, but have a couple worries about that.  First, will it actually fit a cable properly?  It looks a little small unless you use a short cable and definitely too small for many sleeved cables.  Secondly, the latching mechanism looks like it won't be easy to open and I always worry about how robust the mechanism is.  My other concern is that the USB Mini-B hole looks like it might be too small for some Mini-B housings.  Definitely an interesting concept and I'd love to see what comes of it.

Wait, so is the GH60 not going to work with the Pure/Poker case then?

Hey, great stuff, i would be interested in one for sure.

Another thought though, i feel since it is made to be portable, why not make a cover for the keycaps as well, like a small lunch box! Because then you can through it in any Bags or luggages when travelling instead of carrying it in a briefcase.

And even better if the cable compartment underneath is big enough for an ipad usb adaptor, then i would also suggest the case when open and double as a stand, so you end up have a mechanical keyboard ipad stand, which ill be gladly using all the time.

What do you think?

I offer a rough size graphic   Unit mm

Place the USB cable should be sufficient space

I could see that storage compartment opening all the way to create a foot for a negative incline.

I cant believe no one's thought of that before...that's a pretty simple and clever idea. Those renders look so nice too.

Are you planning on making this case for yourself soon?

Honestly, I'm still not sure it would be enough space for a cable.  I just measured a cable with calipers and the USB A housing is 9mm thick, the USB Mini B housing is 7mm thick, and as sleeved USB cable is ~5-6mm.  The cable might not have an issues on the part butted up against the wall, but the housing will have clearance issues deeper in the case because of the slope.  It will be ~10mm where the USB housing butts up against the wall, but closer to 8mm where the other end of the housing ends in the case, making it so you can't properly close the lid.  Additionally, only incredibly short cables that don't have any overlap in the compartment would work.

I'm not bashing the design as I think it's really interesting, I just have serious doubts about the ability for that compartment to be used in the way that it's designed to be used.

I use thin USB CABLE

I believe that my professional thin USB CABLE 1.5 m are loadable

would this help?

moved from the prototyping thread...
GH60 rev. B (second prototype) dimensions

Okay, the rev. B board is nearly ready and here are the dimensions which hopefully will be final.
Could you (case makers and owners) check if these dimensions will fit your cases nicely?
These were made basing on my measurements of the Poker plastic case and comparison with rev. A.
FYI the switches are centered in the board in both directions, so the distances between keycap edges and PCB edges are the same on the left as on the right and the same on the top as on the bottom.

Show Image

EDIT (extra info):
The 7mm distance is the horizontal distance from the center of the top-left mounting hole and the horizontal center of the USB connector.
The USB receptacle stands out 2mm beyond the PCB edge.
The corner radius is 2mm.

EDIT 2: updated image with reset switch position and element drawings
