ALL KEYBOARD SITE LIST!
« on: Fri, 19 July 2013, 08:42:05 »
KEYBOARD SITE LIST :
List is divided in Switch Types; Rubber Dome (Specific), Classic Cherry MX, Special Cherry MX, Topre, Buckling Springs, Ergo, Mac & Other.

Last Edited @ 0 Read
- Oh Yeah; now we're off to a good start.

- First Things First; Rubber Dome. While you may consider Rubber Dome to be crap, i'll still put in a section for these in case people are looking for specific keyboards. Let's say we put in this list sites that sells keyboards that are worth something even if they are made out of Rubber Dome, like the G15 or other cool keyboards.

- Second; Two different Cherry MX sections. Let me explain myself here; you know just like me that four Cherry MX colors (Black Blue Brown Red) are more available and usually less expensive than the whole rest, which are mostly a little more "rare". Most websites are not selling anything else than keyboards with "Classic" Cherry MX colors therefor i would like to divide them.

A Website in the Classic section only contains Classic MX.
A Website in the Special section will most probably contain both of them; therefor i will not put them in both lists. Be aware of the little trick here; if you are looking for Classic MX but ain't finding anything worthy of your attention in the Classic MX section give a look to the Special MX section too.

- Third; It'll be a lot bigger than my Keycaps list. Therefor, please be AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE when posting sites; divide them by sections and make sure they are not already present.

- Fourth; Root URLs are the best. Make sure the site you are giving me is as clear as possible, and add the "http://" or "https://" beforehand.

- Fifth; A Website may appear in multiple sections if they sell multiple kinds of keyboards.

- Sixth; Mac keyboards. "Ye kwarda ur returd all kiiburdz wurks on Mak durr".  Of course, but this section cover specific keyboards that are designed or have layout options for OSX machines. If there's enough demand a Unix/Linux section will be oppened but i hardly believe we will have a lot.

- Seventh; Other sections are for all sites selling keyboards that are unclassifiable like tablet keyboards or rubber keyboards. Feel free to add anything to this section because you never know what the next Intrawebz uzer will be looking for.

NOTICE :

. Point out if the site goes down or something happen, i'll read every posts.
. Report any problem or question in this thread directly.

This could end up being a huge list as most computer stores sell at least some keyboards.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Again, the last list you tried to make is still incomplete so why should we start helping you on this one if you're not showing that you're willing to support your own projects.

Hey it's pretty complete =[ don't be such a meanie. There's a field missing but it will be updated sooner or later. We're not in a hurry here right? I agree it could use more information but it ain't so bad.

Plus i can work two projects at once, i can multitask using Windows. :P

Now don't be m@d and list some keyboard selling websites please that would be great.

As this post points out, listing selection along with the site is beneficial. Perhaps breaking down the listing in retailer and by keyboard type would be easier for all types of visitors to this forum.

Might also be nice to be clear about the locations of these shops (EU, US etc.) since it can make all the difference. For example, I like what elitekeyboards offers. But with VAT, extra shipping costs and customs charges, shops within the EU are the much better option.

I don't really see why.

I'm just trying to help... for the good of all of us... i mean you guys are on the forum anyway right? ._.

All i'm asking is that you post websites you know that are selling stuff, afterwards i take care of creating a list with that.
Anyway, would like to mention forget about retail, only online interests me. If someone is looking at this list online he will order online, not lift his ass and go to bestbuy lol.

Now post some sites.

You're helping by doing zero research and just telling us to do all the leg work or "post some sites"? I appreciate the work you put into the OP and the ideas, but I can easily bang out a table in BBcode since there's a bunch of websites if you look them up. Have you tried looking for any other guides or websites? If not, it just seems like it's asking the community to do your researching for you.

Huuummmm maybe a little misunderstanding here. Let me show you another optic on the problem.

I am doing zero research because i am not currently looking for a keyboard specifically. While i am asking you guys to post some sites, it is strictly because i know that you guys knows much more keyboard selling websites than me alone, and since everybody owns different kinds of keyboards, i will receive sites for buying all kind of keyboards!

On the other hand, I am not doing this for anything neither. No money in game, no fame, nothing. I am simply interested into developing a tool that will be used by users of the forum. Because you know, how many thread have you seen that are newer member looking for stuff and ask for websites and such?

A lot right?

That's why i believe instead of asking the forum and get an answer from 2 or 3 people that will not point out all the options available for our little buddy to get himself a brand new keyboard, we could simply put altogether the knowledge we have just so everyone gets to see what GeekHack knows as a community.

Now look at the keycaps site list. Isn't it a good database or at least a good starting point for someone looking for keycaps to start with? I believe it's a win, therefore we could do the same with keyboards! And hey, by starting the thread keep in mind that i assure i will update it often with the new content people post in the thread. While all i ask is you guys to post once and maybe another time if you find out cool stuff on the internet.

To close this little topic, i would gladly appreciate you stop being m@d at me for no apparent reasons :[

Now post moar knowledge.

That means if you want a nice list you need to post some websites. 9001+ would be our objective here.

I think its a great starting point. But you gave people all this info and no name to call things. It's like giving someone a car but not a name so they just call it "that thing". Vendor names go a long way in helping people. The reason I keep bugging you about it is that I feel like thats the last missing component that you need to add so that I can add it to the Simple Questions thing and help new people like you said.

And I've given you a list of info already.

A suggestion: to include a comment whether the store ships overseas or not.  And maybe whether their shipping costs are disproportionately large (I got a shipping quote for one custom keycap, it was in excess of $25).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. Grim Fandango, does the VAT differ per country? That might be some cool info to add if it does. I'm not sure exactly how hit works.

Yes, this is part of the reason why people are often so surprised when they find out how much extra they have to pay.

Different countries have different percentages for their value added tax or sales tax. Here in Holland, on top of the tax that you paid purchasing the item (for example, US VAT) you have to pay the tax that you would have paid on the product if it were purchased locally. Meaning you have to pay an additional 19% on the original price of the product excluding VAT. What is also included in the price over which they calculate the tax (in theory at least) are any extra costs made like shipping-fee, insurance-fee and packaging. Based on the type of product you are trying to import, additional taxes might apply (we have an additional consumer tax on some products that have to be paid whether you purchase locally or purchase abroad).

But that is not all. There are also several customs fees that need to be paid. There is a thing called import-rights that we have over here. Basically, there is a list of goods that contains the additional percentage that needs to be paid for every type of good. On top of that, if they have to find your package and process it through customs, then they also charge an additional fee for that (administration costs).

The good thing is that sometimes packages somehow do not get noticed and you just get them delivered no questions asked. Other times, you just have to pay an enormous extra amount. I imported some O-rings and stabilizer inserts from WASD a few months ago. The original price was something like 20 US dollar. I ended up paying an additional 18 euros, which means I ended up paying over 100% more than I was hoping. Of course, part of the reason for this was that it was a fairly cheap item and the administration costs are a fixed fee.

This is the reason why shops like WASDkeyboards and Elitekeyboards are pretty much inaccessible to us. The best option for buying items not available in the EU is to buy them second hand and have them sent as a gift with a customs-form attached. From countries within the EU you can ignore all of this. You just pay for the item, pay for shipping and that is it.

Wow i didn't know Holland was screwing you over as much as Canada does here! But the gift trick seems to work, looks like a good workaround if you know a north american willing to help you out. Ever tried?

People have sent me stuff as gifts without problems yes. Basically it has to be under a certain value, and you have to kind of sign on the form that you fulfill all export requirements and the goods in the package match those described on the form. Not sure how they would ever check it.

I have never had someone send me a completely new item. But I don't see how that could not work. So if you know someone or there is a member on the board that you trust, you could have them purchase it for you, then send it your way. He or she could e-mail you the receipt separately if you want to be REALLY careful.

I would suggest this get moved to Google Docs in an spreadsheet. Something that can be filtered by brand and country would be ideal. Same with keycaps. There could be mirrors and whatnot. Unless you guys are afraid to give your data to "the man". A forum post is convenient and all, but I, personally, would much rather have a spreadsheet that is sortable or filterable for relevant information.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it "the list", since it seems like the OP was suggesting something a lot bigger-- a list where you could find out how to buy pretty much any keyboard that you wanted-- but it looks like a useful resource for people who are looking for fairly well-known (by enthusiast standards) brands and models.

That will be buried in "other" and not discussed in polite society.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."
