Coming From the Logitech G110...
« on: Wed, 24 July 2013, 10:07:24 »
would I be more suited to MX Reds or MX Blacks?

I was initally going to go with Reds, however, I read somewhere that membrane keyboards require between 55-70g in terms of actuation force and realistically I don't mind the G110 (2 keys are actually dying though--W and A--I guess I run forward and to the left a lot when I game), however, the MX Reds only require 45g of force--that seems REALLY low. Coming from the G110 would the MX Blacks be more similar?

Have a Fry's or Microcenter near you? I recommend going to those stores and trying the switches out.

It's hard to truly decide what you want until you actually try the switches. Personally I hate MX Reds and like MX Blacks. Reds and Browns are far too light for me.

Sadly, I don't. I'm in Canada and I have absolutely NO local stores that have any mechanical keyboards on display.

Go to a Canada Computer or NCIX, I've tried out all the common switch types (red, black, blue, brown) there. They also sell a green switch keyboard but there was not one on display to test.

I'm in Quebec (Montreal specifically). There is no NCIX or Canada Computer here.

I called FS and asked if the keyboards are available to try--the answer was only the Razer boards had an exposed set of keys to press. I'm 100% sure i don't want a Razer product and the Black Widow is an MX Blue switch which I am fairly certain is the only one I know I don't want as I don't like the tactile bump--it's the only kind I tried.

I guess the only thing I need to know is if the information provided on Tomshardware was accurate, mainly: membrane based keyboards require 55-70g of force. If so I'm certain I won't like the MX Reds and most likely enjoy the MX Blacks.

Thanks for all the input BTW.

Don't do it. Stick with the rubberdomes. Even these loonies here think that their "Topre" boards are so worth it, but those are rubberdomes...

Instead, a single G81 with MY switches will change your life.

I was looking at the Ducky 2108S which actually costs less than my G110 did like 3 years ago. I must note that it is on special at NCIX though.

If you're coming from a rubber dome keyboard and prefer the heavier actuation force, then your best bet is to go with an MX Black keyboard. MX Blacks are linear, so if you prefer a little bump, you may want to go with MX Clears.

But they don't make those in Canadian. :(

Ducky makes good keyboards. I don't now if NCIX has a return policy but worst comes to worst you could get one and if it's not for you maybe sell it or trade it for something else.

^^ I will second the Clears, that is my preferred switch.

I believe that there is a ton of wisdom here. If you find a G81 you like, and if it has the switches that Moose says it should have I would totally take his advice. I wish I would have before I bought my first MX board.

It's completely subjective--you won't know what's right for you until you try it.  I love Browns but don't like Reds: even though both are light, Reds are just bland and have light springy linear motion.  My vote is for MX Black which has more tactility via a heavier spring (but not that heavy really).

General consensus seems to be to recommend MX Browns to those who come to Cherry MX from Rubber Domes.  Browns are light and have a light bump, no click.  They are not like rubber domed keyboards, but they are like... a Cherry equivalent.  Another close one would be MX Clears (even closer to rubber dome, but still not like it), but Clears are more difficult to find and are also quite stiff.

I started with a G110. Went to clears, which actually left my hand aching after 1/2 hours of gaming. Then I went to reds, which I found so light I couldn't even rest my fingers on the keys. I've been on blues two years, I don't like the click and I find them a tad too light(though no accidental clicks). I'd go for blacks if I wasn't looking for a tactile key, there's a good reason most gamers go with those first. They seem to be the closest to rubber domes force wise.

Coming from a Logitech G15, I found that MX Blacks were closer to the rubber dome feel which I am used to. Though I have spent the least time with MX Reds because I don't own one, it is not as bad as I expected/thought it would be. I think I prefer Blacks over Reds and that is also what I recommend to you.. but in the end, if I only had a MX Red keyboard to use, I wouldn't complain.. it's not that bad.
