Cherry G80-8113 Need help programming the extra keys
« on: Thu, 25 July 2013, 08:32:30 »
Hello Everyone

Your neighborhood ignoramus needs help again!

I just bought a Cherry G80-8113. This guy is http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/keyboards/POS/8113/

Keyboard looks very nice, but the extra 16 keys can't be used.

I have a G80-8200 already and using Autohotkey to program the G80-8200 was no problem. The extra keys sent individual scancodes eg F15, so mapping them to do different things was a breeze.

Now I have a big headache with the G80-8113. The top row extra keys do not correspond to F1-24. They all seem to return multiple scancodes. EG one keypress returns numpadend, numpadclear, numpadup.

Can anyone kindly give me advice? The 8113 looks like a very nice keyboard. I got it at a reasonable price so I can harvest it for switches if I really want, but I prefer to be able to use the top row.

To complicate matters, the 8200 is currently hooked up to my computer using my only ps2 connector. The 8113 is hooked to a usb adapter since I only have one ps2 port. I don't know if it makes a difference but I have no other way to use both at the same time to compare.

There's a Cherry tools program on their site. Look around for it. Its really simple to use.

Cherry Tools allows you to at least program the 8200. Below is a manual way of programming the 8200 without Cherry Tools. I don't know if either Cherry Tools or the manual method works on the 8113 though. My 8200 can only be programmed over PS/2, but once programmed it will work over USB.

Manual methods which I got from a Cherry rep:

To Program a Key
More
1. Close all programs and open an editor such as Notepad or go to a DOS Prompt
2. Enter program mode by holding down the following six key combination until you hear two beeps and ***MENU ENTRY*** is displayed in your editor.Ctrl (left) ,Shift (left), Alt(left), Ctrl (right), Shift (right), Alt (right)
3. Press the key you wish to set to program (to select it)
4. Enter the string of keystrokes that you want
5. Press the key a second time (to set to close the key)
6. Cancel the Find/Replace box using the mouse (for Windows 2000 and XP users) if it opens
Repeat Steps 3 through 6 for any other keys that you would like to program
7. Exit Program Mode by pressing the Spacebar (you should see ***MENU EXIT*** and hear two beeps)

To Set a Key Back to Default
More
1. Close all programs and open an editor such as Notepad or go to a DOS Prompt
2. Enter program mode by holding down the following six key combination until you hear two beeps and ***MENU ENTRY*** is displayed in your editor. Ctrl (left) ,Shift (left), Alt(left), Ctrl (right), Shift (right), Alt (right)
3. Press the key you wish to set to default (to select it)
4. Press the key a second time (to set to default)
5. Cancel the Find/Replace box using the mouse (for Windows 2000 and XP users)
Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for any other keys that you would like to set to default
6. Exit Program Mode by pressing the Spacebar (you should see ***MENU EXIT*** and hear two beeps)

I'm pretty sure the g80-8113 I have can be programmed over USB. It could be related to the time it was manufactured though.

yeah, my stuff is in good condition, but clearly old due to the ps2 connector. Cherry Tools (The latest 5.9 version) keeps telling me it can't find a keyboard!

but I'm going to try out damorgue's method and see if at least i can get back the regular f13-24 keys. As long as I can get them back to one scancode I can use autohotkey.

Try unplugging the other board and plugging that thing in via your PS/2 port? Also, and I can't remember if this was for something else or Cherry tools, but I think it has to be run on XP. Vista/7 don't work...

DaMorgue, are you absolutely sure?

I can start up cherry tools v5.9 and tinker with it; my problem is it won't recognize any Cherry keyboard attached. I have tried attaching two and it won't recognize them.

I can start up cherry tools v5.9 and tinker with it; my problem is it won't recognize any Cherry keyboard attached. I have tried attaching two and it won't recognize them.

I couldn't get it to work in win 7, and when I tried XP it worked. The person from Cherry I got hold of seemed to confirm it, but I might have switched from 64bit win7 to 32bit XP, so it might have been caused by 32bit/64bit I suppose. They may also have fixed it since then but I also used v5.9 so if they did, they didn't bother to change the version number. I can only find 5.8 so I Think that is what I used.

I got several 8200 at one point, one of which seemed bricked and didn't get recognised even with PS/2 and 32bit XP. The Cherry rep told me to flash the newest firmware on it, but I restated that it didn't get recognised by Cherry Tools and was thus impossible. That is when the Cherry rep gave up. So what I did was that I hooked up one of the working ones, started Cherry Tools which recognised it, then swapped out the keyboards right before it commenced flashing so that it would flash the unrecognised one and the board which previously appeared bricked started working. This is however not something I would recommend as I think I got it working by sheer dumb luck. I was lucky enough to also have a few 8200 at hand.

Edit: I used Cherry Tools v5.8

Thanks Damorgue

I think you have a solid explanation for my problems. I have contacted Cherry and sent them photos of the serial numbers, but probaby my stuff is new old stock and incompatible with 64-bit win7.

Will have to fire up an old computer for the purpose of flash-restoring my keyboard I guess. I just want the keys back to stock.

BTW your signature is awesome. Just changing two letters turns a family-friendly name into something distinctly adult!

Hey DaMorgue

I haven't been able to set the keys on my 8113 back to default. Do you have the Cherry rep's contact?

thanks in advance!

What keys? on the 8200 you can't remap the alpha keys at all.

I guess I have an 8200 lying around, I might plug it into my computer and program it before taking it apart like the other three.

I'll investigate this tomorrow a bit more (time to sleep, and i'm pretty tired), but about the Cherry Tools are available for windows 7 32&64 bits and windows xp 32&64 bits

Just choose your keyboard in the forma, and you will see all the software versions, maybe trying to download the version for your language and uninstall your current version and install the last version from there might be worth it

I only have 1 g80, so I cant really swap them out.

When I got the keyboard, I used the drivers on the CD, and it didn't work. Didn't recognize my keyboard etc. So I uninstalled, and got the newest ones, v5.9, and it detects my board, but I cant remap any keys.

What keys? on the 8200 you can't remap the alpha keys at all.

What are the alpha keys? I would like to remap the keys above the arrow keys, and the help button, and if possible the keys to the right of the numpad.
I just want to rebind them to different keys, like rebind "HELP" to "PAGEDOWN", and a blankkey to "END" or something of that sort, even a blankkey to \

Hope this extra info helps, and thanks for all the help

Sorry, I should have been more specific.

I meant that the a-z keys and number row aren't programmable, however, the tenkey and all the relegendable keys should be. I believe all the keys you mentioned are programmable.
