How do you guys choose the color of your backlit keyboards?
« on: Mon, 29 July 2013, 08:17:32 »
Hey guys, I'm having a difficult time deciding on what color backlighting I want for my new keyboard. I know a lot of people just go by theme, matching it with case lighting and the like. However, in my situation I don't have a theme, my Razer Deathadder has a green LED, my PC Case has a blue LED in the front and I have Red Cathode Tubes inside. I also don't want lighting that can be too distracting and I've actually heard that specific colors can be more soothing than others.

So, how do you guys decide on what color you want? Are you following a theme, is just a favorite color, or a decision on a whim?

Easy. I ask myself, "Self are those LEDs purple or pink?"

Yes? = Buy

No? = Don't buy

Seriously though, my Pure and my KMAC have pink/purple LEDs.

Anything but blue is fine. Blue is actually one of the harshest colors on the human eyes. I'd either stay green, or go for an amber / yellowish color for a nice effect. Red is a close second.

I just went with my favourite colour: green. But to be fair, I do kind of have a green themed set up going on.

After I got my first RF, I stopped caring about backlighting all in all. I asked myself, how often do I find myself in a dark room where I can't turn the light on if I need to look at my keys? So I just decided that LEDs were irrelevant to me and stopped caring. If I were to do something like build a KMAC or a GON board, then I'd go and do something tasteful and custom, such as just the F-Row and the arrow cluster or something, but in the end, LEDs just make your life more difficult. Try modding a board with LEDs, that's just another 2 joints per switch you have to desolder unless you mod the switch tops.

Blue is a big no-no in my book. It feels eye-searing when used in the dark.
Yellow-green is too bright for me as well.

Red is great -- I read somewhere that to preserve night-vision, red is what's often used in the military.
Yellow-orange looks nice from pictures I've seen -- I'm keen to make a Deux Ex: Human Revolution themed black/orange setup with one. Haven't tried amber backlit personally yet though.

I was considering red or blue backlighting but I was afraid that I might later regret not having gone with a different color.

I gave up and I finally chose white backlighting since it was the neutral option that I wouldn't get tired of.

I was orignally going to get a purple ducky TKL but then I found cherry profile and dont want to go back.  Thick PBT and thick abs doubleshots are just way too nice.

This doesn't make any sense. You can just swap the caps you like onto that board?

I used to have a Saitek Eclipse II, with variable backlighting - blue, red, and violet.  After years of gaming with this one, I went with something different.  Green.

Plus green matches the LEDs on the Razer mouse I use, I like the symmetry.

There is no point of putting those keycaps on a backlit keyboard since they wont shine through.

Yes I agree it does look cool.  I was thinking of getting a ducky but I ended up getting another Filco.

Get your favourite colour!

Or ... my first backlit had red LEDs, with the reasoning that red has less impact on the eyes in a dark room.

My second one had green, and it was a really nice deep green shade.

The next one ... well, probably blue, despite what everyone has been saying.  The Ducky Shine 3 blue is apparently a deep blue, but the Shine Zero with blue is a much paler blue.

I have a keyboard with LEDs, but I never use it. It's too bright and distracting, and I don't need to see my keys. However, if I had the Ducky Shine III I would use it just because it's cool.

Only because blue is my favorite color, that is all.

White to match my case power light and fan controller backlight. Plus it makes it look a lot more like a nice workstation. I'm just personally not a fan of red/blue/green/etc. setups. I prefer a more neutral look.

Also white tends to show translucent keycaps better.

Do you need backlighting? I don't. Neither do you. Anyone who is proficient in typing (i.e. touch typing) doesn't need it. Moreover, the room shouldn't ever be dark when you're on the computer—big contrast puts additional strain on eyes and may result in dizziness. Cherry doubleshots or printing on thinkpad keyboards have so good contrast that you should be able to read the lettering even in ambient light, in case you need it. Also, keycaps on most backlit keyboards are low quality... and not only keycaps. There are plenty of other negative externalities, such as higher power consumption, more difficult desoldering etc.

Human eyes perceive different colors differently, and different kinds of LEDs have different specifications, e.g. blue diodes are usually brighter. I definitely recommend to choose other color than blue/purple, STFW blue-light hazard and HEV light. Different colors have all sorts of psychological effects as well. I'd go with green for this reason.

Backlight is partially for aesthetical purposes--many of us don't get it to aid us with typing in the dark.  I don't know why that point is overlooked so much.  LED glow around keycaps looks nice.

Yep, this.  Just like the green glow, matches the glow from the mouse.  :-)

Also helps to locate the odd key or two, different games use different combos of keys.

Most keyboards that offer backlighting (Ducky, especially) also provide some levels of dimming.  But backlighting isn't for everyone, many people prefer just LEDs on the lock keys.

À chacun son goût, as it were.

Haven't had any keyboard with backlighting but if I were to buy one it'd preferably one with white backlighting because it's neutral and doesn't draw to much attention. Though I'd still choose non-backlit keyboards over backlit ones if the non-backlit had better keycaps, layouts etc.

For example, I chose the Ducky G2Pro over the Ducky Shine because it had green switches and had pbt dyesub keycaps, unlike the shine which had disgusting abs keycaps and only mx redbluebrownblack.

I have to disagree. What I've found is that the price is fairly the same or close (in 5-10$ range). You might think that this means that backlit keyboards are lower quality since they are the same price as the non-backlit. But generally there is always something more to them. There are PBT caps, there are non-standard colors etc.

Or at least that is what I believe :)

Blue is pleasing to my brain so I stick with it.  It also matches everything.  I think white would be the only color(or lack of color?) I actually wouldn't like.  I think it would catch my eye too easily from across a room and I think it would show in my peripheral vision too much.  Orange might be bad too for that.

Based on this thread I looked up some of this info and it looks like bright yellow is probably the harshest and a shade of green/blue is most pleasing to people.  Also, any benefit from red not ruining night vision would probably be lost due to looking at a monitor.  Some of the descriptions below talk about fatigue or a pleasing effect but not all of them.

http://scr.csc.noctrl.edu/multimedia/ColorTheory.htm

Black
Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. Some fashion experts say a woman wearing black implies submission to men. Black outfits can also be overpowering, or make the wearer seem aloof or evil. Villains, such as Dracula, often wear black.

White
Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors. Doctors and nurses wear white to imply sterility.

Red
The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.
The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

Blue
The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.

Green
Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on TV sit in "green rooms" to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. However, seamstresses often refuse to use green thread on the eve of a fashion show for fear it will bring bad luck.

Yellow
Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.

Purple
The color of royalty, purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine and romantic. However, because it is rare in nature, purple can appear artificial.

Brown
Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Brown can also be sad and wistful. Men are more apt to say brown is one of their favorite colors.
