Filco MJ2 TKL Issue with T and G Keys
« on: Thu, 01 August 2013, 10:11:29 »
When I got my Filco MJ2 TKL Ninja with Cherry blues, I replaced the keycaps with the classic beige with blue set from Originative. When typing, I noticed that I often had typos where the "g" key was hit when trying to strike the "t" key, so that "the" came our as "gthe". This occurred most often after first typing an "f", and so I thought it might have to do with the fact that the F and J keys in the replacement keycap set are scooped, because I did not encounter these errors with other keyboards, such as the IBM Model M, IBM SSK, or Leopold FC660M (with Cherry blues), none of which had scooped F and J keycaps.

To test this hypothesis, I switched the F and J keys on the Filco with the F and J keys on the Leopold (which have the dye sub PBT Cyrillic sets from Originative with underscored F and J keycaps rather than scooped keycaps). The result: no errors on the Leopold with the scooped F and J keycaps, but the same errors on the Filco with the non-scooped keycaps. The alignments and heights of the keys appear to be fine on both the Filco and the Leopold. Has anyone else noticed this problem?

I suppose that this issue merely reflects poor typing accuracy on my part with perhaps a higher sensitivity (or "better" NKRO) on the Filco than on the other boards that I use. In any case, for my own use, this puts another minus in the Filco TKL column and another plus in the Leopold FC660M column, further contributing to my current selection of the Leopold FC660M as my second-favorite keyboard (next to the IBM SSK).

I have those keycaps on my filco MJ2 TLK with browns and have no problems at all, other than wanting to look down at how beautiful they look all the time.

Yep, as I mentioned, this "problem" is more likely my own idiosyncratic typing technique. I typed for years on a Model M before starting to use contemporary boards just a couple of months ago. A buckling spring requires much more pressure to actuate than a Cherry blue, and so I can get away with sloppy typing habits on a Model M. As for the Filco TKL vs the Leopold FC660M, perhaps my Filco requires a somewhat lighter touch than my Leopold, despite the fact that they are both equipped with Cherry blues. I wish that Cherry greens were more widely available!

I certainly agree about the keycaps -- the "Olivetti" set is beautiful.

You can get a QFR with greens and there might be a ducky with greens that you can get as well.

... I wish that Cherry greens were more widely available! ...

Yes, I have seen these. The Ducky was not quite to my liking, but I have the QFR Stealth with Cherry greens on backorder. I think CM might have some kind of nearly exclusive rights to the Cherry greens, at least for the time being. I hope that in the future, greens will be a standard offering across all producers of boards with Cherry switches.

Now that I have migrated from a full-size-plus board (Model M) to TKL, and downsized from there to a 60%-plus board (Leo FC660M), I have come to appreciate the elegance of 60% designs, such as embodied in the Tex Beetle and Poker II. I would like to see a green switch option for these 60% boards; but first, I look forward to finding out how well I like greens after the CFR arrives.
