New IBM Model M - Is it real to find?
« on: Sat, 10 August 2013, 05:12:52 »
Hello Everyone!

Is it real to find new (not used) IBM Model M?
If yes - where and how much does it cost?

Thanks!

They do turn up from time to time, usually on eBay.

Have a look through recent posts about Model M - sorry I can't find it now - there was a discussion about new SSK (which is the TKL Model M) availability and prices.

There was also a discussion about how vendors had to keep a certain number of IBM parts are FRU, and how after the systems they were replacing went out of service the FRU parts just languished in warehouses all around the country (and world?) because people had simply forgotten about them.  Every now and again someone finds a stash of old NIB FRU parts.

They usually sell for stupid amounts of money on eBay. Unless you're into the collecting game, you're better off buying a Unicomp.

Not that stupid.  I can't find the thread atm, but NIB SSKs were selling for $150 to $200 recently.

Could be real, although condition would be average.

I got my two for $31.

You can easily get a Model M off of ebay and/or from the classifieds on here for less than that.

I think it was like one popped up and either was gone really quick (buy it now) and/or no one noticed (auction).

New In Box? I don't think so. Seems like the most recent one was about $375 and there was debate about whether it was actually new.

People get obsessed with virgins. In some cases, it might be worth it.

The good thing about ancient IBM iron is that it can be easily taken completely apart and totally cleaned, repaired, or upgraded without touching a soldering iron.

QFT and correctness.

Was $375 and a lot of sniping going on about whether or not it was NIB. Either way, people pay absolutely stupid amounts for SSKs. SSKs primarily sold as part of orders, which means actual price paid brand new from IBM delivered would be far, far below $100.

Ooooh, UltraNavs.
Those are literally Thinkpad keyboards with a bottom case and cable. No other modifications. TrackPoint IV in them, too.
