Ruby supersystem keycaps cherry compatible ?
« on: Tue, 03 September 2013, 06:50:19 »
Hi,

I came across this page on the Signature Plastics site and I'm especially interested in their relegendable keycaps.
http://keycapsdirect.com/ruby.php
They are for the Ruby Supersystem, which apparently is mostly used in US gas stations.

Does anybody know whether these keycaps are Cherry MX compatible ?

I found this image of the Ruby switches:

They look very different from cherry switches ofcourse, but they do have a cross in the center so perhaps it still works ?
What kind of mount is this ?

ciao,

J.

Yes those will fit. Looks like MY switches but Halverson and I were sorting some of those caps from his crap bag and they'll fit MX switches.

Anything bigger than a 1x cap might not work for you. Most normal 2x caps use a stabilizer, thus they have three inserts (one in the middle for the switch, and two outside of the middle for the stabilizer inserts).

POS 2x caps aren't made the same way. Most POS boards are a matrix of 1x switches (just like the picture you show in the OP). Caps that take up more than 1x are usually made to go over multiple switches, so caps like the ones you show pictures of will have two stems (one for each switch). Thus, the spacing is off, and they won't fit.

Hi esoomenona,

thanks  for the explanation, but yes, I am aware that these will not work as modifiers on a normal keyboard.
I am mainly looking for 1x1 relegendables to fit a Tipro POS board, and it would be nice if these 2x1 keys will fit too...

ciao,

J.

Ah, I see. In that case, I don't think you'll have any problems.

So these 2x keys use 2 switches instead of one switch and a modifier then.  Any idea on the spacing between 2 stems on the caps?  It is for a custom project so the locations can be moved around to accomodate.

Take two caps off of your Cherry MX keyboard and measure the distance between the two.

Gotcha I just wasn't sure if they moved the stems on the caps around a bit to intentionally make them non compatible.

Apologies for the thread necro, but I had the same idea and asked them via their Facebook page and this is the response I got. Exactly in line with what was discussed above.

Myself:
is the keyset for the Ruby Super system all Cherry MX compatible?
PMK:
Yes, the Ruby system is compatible with MX switches, however since it is a POS system, the 2 space keys have only 2 posts, not 3.

Nice -- what are you gonna map them to? I use the "Pause" button on my keyboard to mute notifications.
