Hello. My RSI brought me here.
« on: Sat, 07 September 2013, 09:13:53 »
Hello.  I'm here to learn about keyboard and mouse solutions for worsening RSI.  I've been a dedicated Goldtouch user since 2002 but am interested in trying something else.  My work demands marathon computer sessions with a lot of mouse, keyboard, and number-pad work.

I'm a quiet lurker type but I did want to pop up to say hello.  Also, I have two old, heavy, white Goldtouch PS/2 keyboards.  One that, due to age, requires increased force to press the keys--causing me pain.  The other one has many non-working keys--the result of a well intentioned cleaning frenzy that went horribly awry.  After reading some of the fantastic posts that describe members' efforts to build their own keyboard, I'd like to offer them to the amazing, creative keyboard architects here for shipping cost only.  I have no idea how much it would cost for the packing & shipping, but I could do a test run at the post office to get the cost.

I've already learned a lot from reading this site.  Thank you to all.

Lisae

Welcome to GH!

Hmm, Goldtouch.  I don't know much about them, other than I think they are all rubber domed keyboards.  With split design, and standard staggered QWERTY layout.

If your main concern is RSI, maybe try to get a custom ergodox.  I don't have one, but for RSI it might help.  Also I dunno if you have tried a trackball, but those seem to help RSI as well.

My recommendation would be a RealForce 87U variable silent keyboard.  Like this: http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless&pid=rf_se170s

That is a TKL, which is better, since you can use a seperate numpad (which you probably already have).

The white ones are out of stock right now.  I have one of these, and for marathon typing sessions I pull it out.  My primary keyboard is an HHKB Pro 2 Type-S, but when I really need to do like 8 hours of typing, I pull out the 87U variable silent.  The 30g weighted keys for the pinkies really cuts down on fatigue and hand pain.  However, it's not a split layout, so I dunno if it will help you.  But it helps me.  I don't have full-blown RSI, but I have wrist and hand pain on occasion.

Others have already mentioned the ErgoDox
Acidfire has an edox like board with a lot of improvments in development - http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44940.0

There's also-
Kinesis - http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/
Maltron - http://www.maltron.com/shop/category/48-maltron-dual-hand-3d-keyboards
μTRON - http://www.personal-media.co.jp/utronkb/
Truly Ergonomic - http://www.trulyergonomic.com/
a few old vintage boards
And if you can somehow find one...
Datahand - http://www.datahand.com/

Frankly if you already have RSI I wouldn't even think about maybe even looking at any straight staggered (well standard staggered, μTRON would be fine).
