New to mech keyboards, HHKB in the mail
« on: Sun, 08 September 2013, 05:04:27 »
Hi,

First post here. I've been reading the forum for about a week to find a replacement for my 7 years crappy $20 rubber dome keyboard (yeah, i know...).

I've gone from being sceptical and wanting an entry level mech keyboard to buy an HHKB.  It's in the mail and I hope the topre switches will suit me well (i'm a developer) :)
I'm looking forward to test red and brown switches too. I'll probably buy a CM quickfire and/or poker II, these are much cheaper but seem to be quite decent boards.

I'm also quite impressed by the custom stuff developped here (GH60, ...), it makes me want to dust off my soldering iron ;)

Thanks for the awesome community.

Welcome to GH and you are starting with a good choice. The HHKB was one that appealed to me at first too, but I tried a half dozen others before I bought one. Its one of my favorites.

Welcome to GH.

Great choice on the HHKB, btw.  You are starting at the top.

I dunno if you're serious.  But I really do wish I had started with HHKB.  I wasted two lonely years in the wasteland of Cherry MX.  Money flushed down the turlet.

absolutely serious, the only thing cherry mx has going for it is wide adoption and relatively easy to find parts... but i don't NEED to modify my hhkb. it works and looks fine without any work.

:thumb:  YES!  You order an HHKB online.  You receive it in the mail.  It works perfectly from day one.  No lube, stickers, replacement keycaps, solid gold springs from Korea.  Nothing.  Simple. It's how a keyboard should be.  Why everyone can't see this, is simply a mystery to me.  Also Topre switches are better than the best modded Cherry MX.  If Cherry MX is so good, why does everbody who has one want to mod it?  Because it needs modding.  Topre is fine as it is, ab initio*.
