Shine 3 TKL or fullsize?
« on: Sun, 08 September 2013, 14:07:32 »
I'm deciding between the TKL or fullsize version. I don't know which I should buy. I'm starting to think that a TKL would be better for gaming minus in planetside since I kinda of have to use the numapd to talk in various types of chats but I can always buy a keycool 22 key numpad and put next to my mouse mat. Which should I buy?

Need a numpad? Get a full size
Don't need a numpad? Get a TKL
It's really obvious..

This, really.  TKL is more ergonomic in that it allows you to place the mouse closer, and not have to have your arms sticking out too far.

Although I do switch between HHKB and Model M at home :))
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

well, myself very much appricated full size, but since few weeks i'm crazy about shine 3 tkl. Reason i had possibility to check filco tkl in work and for gaming (friend from work borrowed it). I was almost convinced that without digits on right side i'll be done (i mean half of my work depends on them) but it's not true...... and boy oh boy about llllllllllllllllllllllooooooooot of place free on right side:D. Thanks to that disstance for hand is significantly lower and both gaming and work is way better.

Personally I like tenkeyless or smaller.

When I center a full-size keyboard in front of me, I find that my mouse is at an awkwardly large distance from my body. When I need the numpad, I simply have a USB one that I hook up.

I also just like the look of tenkeyless. But even if I did not , I would still go tenkeyless.

I used to love fullsize but since switching i have found that having my shoulder not as stretched out to the side is more benefitial than the numpad. Ive gotten used to using the numbers at the top.

I'm waiting for a TKL Shine 3, personally, as I have a few full size keyboards already and find that having my hands in front of me, in-line with the monitor, is much better ergonomically.  Personally, I find TKL still wastes space, and 60%ish is best, although a lot of them seem to have drawbacks in one way or another.

Best to consider which keys you can and can't live without, and go from there.  If you don't do much spreadsheet action, you'll likely benefit from a smaller board.  Just my 2 cents worth!

As a side note, I'm hoping the TKL Shine 3 comes out soon and is quickly available in Canada... itchin for a new board!  (and the QFR always looks so tempting)

You'd be surprised.  Canada Computers has a decent selection, lets me take them out and try them (as keyboards with the same switches can still feel vastly different).

Some online places are very good to Canadians, too, so we don't get royally bent-over on duty charges.

Also, I just noticed via another thread that mechanicalkeyboards has the TKL Shine 3 listed, although it hasn't been released yet.  The photo is cropped from a full-sized Shine 3 board.

In case your purchase was imminent.
