Keyboard Advice Please

Hopefully, someone here will help me...

Past keyboard history... I used an old IBM M10 for many years and genuinely loved it. Unfortunately, I couldn't take it with me when I left that job. Until four weeks ago, I used an Apple Pro Keyboard circa 2002 on both my linux and apple boxes. Despite my best efforts, it's dead. I'm presently typing this on an $8 US Logitech that I hate. I needed something to type on in a pinch and wanted to research my options before spending money. The only good thing that could happen to this keyboard is a blow torch.

I use touch typing, probably a by-product of twenty years of piano, and regularly typed 110+ wpm on the old keyboards. (Don't ask what I'm getting out of the Logitech.) I earn my living writing articles and programming web apps. I spend most of my life working in EMacs, LyX, and OpenOffice.

My budget is $100 or less (preferably $40-80 range). I'm currently looking at the UniComp Space Saver, iOne Scorpius M10, and ABS M1. Does anyone have any thoughts on these models or suggestions on others I should consider? I really do want something that clicks and has tactile feedback. I can live without the clicks, but the tactile feedback is extremely important. Windows keys, media keys, and number pads are not important.

Do you really need the extra media keys?

If you're strict on your budget, then you might want to try the Scorpius M10.  Otherwise, depending on your preferences, there's a bunch starting at $100+ ranging from linear black Cherries to ultra clicky old-school IBM Bucking Springs

With some searching you could get an IBM Model M for well under $100. Personally I'd start there, and then if you find the keys too stiff, try Cherry blues or white ALPS.

The Scorpius M10 I had typed beautifully. Also no signs of the quality control problems others had noticed. A good choice.

Are you indifferent to the numpad?  Can't go wrong with a 'board from Unicomp (IMHO), but if you want something sans numpad, the new white Alps-equipped Filco 'board might be a good option (although with shipping and so forth, might be over your budget).

You can get a refurbished smk-85 with white alps on ebay from DSI's store for about $50 shipped.  You could get a used model M on ebay for about $50 shipped too, in pretty good condition in most cases.

The lower price limit will be about $50 (for either a new m10, refurbed smk-85, or used model M). There is no upper price limit

It all comes down to what you're looking for. Do you want old school clicky switches? (ie, buckling springs or alps). Or do you want some of the newer more civilized switches (like one of the cherries) but which will be slightly more subdued in comparison? If you want tactile that means either blue cherries (with audible click) or brown cherries.

Once you know which switch you want, then you can hunt for price and layout style.

I just purchased an M10 off Amazon. A friend of mine has an SMK-85 and HHK lite he's willing to lend. (His primary is a DAS II. Until my financial situation is more stable, I'll drool...) Anyhow, another friend is going to a US government auction in January. She said she would try to pick up a few M10s while she's there.
