QuickFire Rapid vs QuickFire TK
« on: Sat, 21 September 2013, 11:44:30 »
Please ignore the price on both of them, the price doesn't matter to me since its for my birthday.
What do you think is better?

I saw that a lot of people here really like the Rapid and i don't really know why and why not to buy the TK since it has backlight and NKRO with USB and stuff like that but just from their website i never had any of them and i don't which one has a better build quality etc.
so which of them do you think i should get?

How is this  different from your other thread?

And if you look around there are some good threads detailing the positives and negatives on both the QFR and TK.

If the price doesn't matter get a better keyboard, not these entry level boards.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

this thread is a comparison of 2 keyboard and in the other thread the zowie is still an option also there are a few questions about modding there and in this thread its a comparison between the two keyboards

tk review

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46501.0

I will add my own comments since I have owned both boards now although didn't use each one very much.

First there are newer models of both the QFR and the TK, this matters because the newer QFR has a little different coating I believe and can also be purchased with stealth caps, on the TK the newer models has a colored plate and better firmware.

I had the older TK and the first thing I noticed was out of the box I had key caps with paint coming off. Yes you get backlighting but I found the key caps to be awful. Also you will have a harder time finding replacement key sets for the TK because it has a non standard bottom row.

On the QFR it is a solidly built keyboard again no backlighting if that's what you want but it is easier if you choose later to replace key caps as it is a standard tenkeyless layout.

First i said that i doesn't matter between the two and also i live in Israel and i don't have a lot of keyboard to choose from with Cherry MX red switches i guess i could buy maybe the K60 or K90 or K95 but they are getting pretty expensive..

Okay lets put the K60 K90 and the K95 in the options.. tops i just wont get them and get the second most recommended keyboard but that i will do on my second thread where i compare between more keyboards here i compare between these two keyboards..

SpAmRaY's response is probably more articulate than I can provide. So I'll just say that although the TK doesn't feel shoddy in any way, the QFR feels like it's constructed of higher quality, and if a backlight isn't necessary I'll recommend the QFR.

I own (basically) 3 Rapids, and at one point, I owned 3 TK's. Here are my thoughts.

I know this may be a preference thing, but I found the TK to be a bit gimmicky. At first, I thought the whole tenkey/nav block-in-one was a cool idea, but in practice, it doesn't really work. Switching between the tenkey and the nav block is really kind of annoying, especially when you find yourself needing to use both. You're better off getting either a true TKL board, such as the Rapid, or go all the way for a fullsize, like the XT. Also, like others have said, the general build quality of the TK is definitely not as good as the Rapids. The case is very cheap, and keycaps aren't as nice, and on top of it all, you ended paying more for the TK. Personally, I would recommend the Stealth if you can get your hands on one, it more or less a Rapid with side-printed keycaps. Looks cool, in my opinion.

So yeah, Rapid gets my vote. Cheaper and higher quality.

My 2¢ on this, I have a QF TK as well as a QF Stealth, which is the same layout as the Rapid.
Personally, I think there's almost no difference. I don't think that the integrated numpad is gimmicky at all, I got used to switching between and it's actually quite useful. However, if you truly almost never use it, go for the Rapid, because it's a little easier to find the arrow keys in fast-paced gameplay or the like.
However, aesthetically the TK has backlighting, which you may like. The Red and Blue have red/blue backlighting, while the brown has white backlighting; it has five brightness settings (2 is usually a good setting), a breathing mode (alternates between bright and dim), and best of all the arrow keys light up when numlock is off and are always off when numlock is on so that you know when you can use it, which I find very nice.

So personally, I would recommend the TK, unless you don't want backlighting and don't use the numpad, then the Rapid is a great choice.

As for keys, it depends on the game you play. I play LoL mostly, and having the tactility of the MX Blue helps me know when I press a switch, I feel more controlled because the click lets me know when I've gotten the activation, and I don't have to press all the way down like with a Red. So with games that have abilities, I suggest blue or even brown, which is a nice intermediate.
But if you play games with lots of double-tapping, blues are not good for that, and I say that as a 130+ typist; double- and triple-tapping are property of MX Red, LLC.

Oh, and as mentioned before, please don't post the same thread multiple times.
