Hello
« on: Thu, 26 September 2013, 08:08:31 »
Hello fellow geekhack members!

After several years of following the various threads in this forum, learning a lot and thoroughly enjoying myself, I've decided to join in with the discussion and fun.

I'm a programmer and am a fast typist.  I didn't formally learn how to type, but picked up a very decent speed without having to look over the past 32 years.  I'm learning how to use the right fingers on the right keys, now - it's slow going!  I'm having a bought of Forearm Tendinitis and think that my typing style and the way that my arm is positioned while holding the mouse has a lot to do with it.  I've never had any problems with wrist or finger RSI.

My first foray into mechanical keyboards was a Model M in the 80's and then went with the flow into the dregs of (rather nasty) keyboards that came with computers or the cheapest when self-built.  About 10 years ago, I bought an Ortek MCK-142Pro and used that until about 3 years ago - when it bit the dust.  UniComp was next, actually 2 of them.  One failed after 14 months with key presses not being recognized, so I bought a new one and used that for another 4 months until it died, too.  I don't think that I abuse keyboards, I just think that it was bad luck!

About a year ago, I purchased a CMStorm Trigger with Cherry Blues and found it nice, but just didn't get on with it - I didn't like the clickiness (which I thought I'd like when I bought it).  Next up was a Ducky Shine II with Clears and just found them too stiff for me after about 5 months.  I think that I prefer a keyboard with less actuation force and less clicky noise - after all of these years.  I'd read good things about Topre key switches (here), so I went for a Realforce 87U 45g a few days ago.  It should be arriving tomorrow.

Anyway, I hope that I'll provide some useful input into the forums and am happy to have finally registered!

Sup! If tendon pain is a major issue, I would recommend an ErgoDox with Ergo Clears.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to look into the Ergo Clears.  It started in June with what appeared to be tennis elbow.  The doctor said that something else had to have triggered the elbow problem.  He mentioned that it could be hacking away on a keyboard all day and my posture while sitting.  The pain in my forearm suggests that is so!

Hey man welcome to geek hack to start, I also used to have the same problem with the pain in your arms. I did a few things to sort this out, I bought a new chair with a good back posture and really good leather arms to rest on, I never changed my key board but maybe if you have the little stands up on the back of your keyboard take them down so your keybaord is flat, This weird position with the keyboard can cause multiple problems like RSI (repetitive strain injury) This helped me and i also stop every hour or so for 5 mins and just stretch my arms and wrists to stop them getting stiff. Oh yeah and welcome once again! Cya around and good luck solving the issue

Thanks for the replies... I'm using one of these at the moment:

ErgoArm Adjustable Computer ArmRest w/o Mouse Pad  http://store.ergoguys.com/sa-500p.html

It helps a lot!

The RealForce arrived today.  It's really nice!
