LF balanced dt880
« on: Thu, 26 September 2013, 08:16:56 »
Not sure if I'll find one here but here goes:

Looking for a balanced dt880, either 250ohm or 600ohm to do comparisons with the hd600, hd650, and the AKG, aka the oldschool flagship trio. Would like for someone to lend me their pair, I will pay for shipping both ways. We could also do a temporary trade in which you send me your dt880 for a few days, then I send you my hd600s and your dt880 back for you to do side by side comparisons.

Balanced dt880 means that the stock cable is desoldered from the drivers, the L and R channels are completely separately, and the new soldered cable must be wired for L+, L-, R+, R- and terminated into either a 4-pin XLR or 2x 3-pin XLR.

Thought tjcaustin or Binge had a pair of these...maybe jwaz too. Wish I did. I really want to try out as many headphones as I can. Anyways, good luck man!

Thanks! I don't think tjcaustin has a pair since it's not listed on his headphone tour. If binge or jwaz had a pair, I don't think it is balanced :(. I need a pair of balanced headphones to do a fair comparison between the oldschool flagship trio. Someone on head-fi was going to lend me his balanced dt880/600 but changed his mind. I found a pair of balanced k702 that I can purchase for $170 but I don't want to buy it until I can at least get the balanced dt880 first.

Since my gr07s are just sitting inside its case the whole time since I've gotten my UERMs, do you want to be first on the tour for them? You'll have to pay for shipping though, since I'm gonna die from shipping headphones back and forth for my comparison if it gets going.

The IEMs? If you're willing to tour em, I'm willing to pay for shipping. And talk to tj...I could've sworn he had a pair of DT880s.

And not to derail further, but can you give me a little more info on the oldschool flagship trio?

It is not derailing imo, it is very on-topic since the point of obtaining the dt880 is to review the oldshool flagship trio. The hd600 isn't part of the trio, but it is $100 less than the hd650 and is more forgiving of lower-end amps/dacs. Of course the hd600 is know to have more lower treble and slightly less bass than the hd650. Oh and someone on head-fi will lend me their hd650s, so I'm set there.

Here's a excellent article by Headfonia that explains the trio, and how they compare:

Ohhh so the DT880 is the baseline that you compare the other three headphones to? Cool. Let me read up. Thanks for the link :D.

I'd say the hd600 is my baseline for comparison since I am most familiar with them, and they are my favorite out of the four. I used to own the dt880/600 and hd650, and I've auditioned the k702 at a store. Now I want to re-evaluate them since I have a much better setup, and also with balanced drive.

The only balanced ones you'll get have been cable modded to have a balanced-capable cable and connector (usually two three pin XLR connectors) I am sure TJcaustin is more than capable of modifying them, but I don't know if he's willing to.

If I had a pair, I'd gladly cable mod them and sell them to you though.

This is uncommon, but some people mod their balanced headphones in other conenctors, such as dual 1/4". It can be anything since it's always a custom job.

Best of luck though!

Thanks! I really wished headphone companies would make it easier for their mid-high end headphones to be changed to balanced. The most common balanced outputs on amps nowadays are 4-pin xLRs. 2x 3-pin  XLR is just way too bulky and unnecessary for headphones.
