Poker 2 - Question about the tilde key
« on: Thu, 03 October 2013, 09:03:35 »
I'm really interested in the poker 2 keyboard.  As a programmer, I've slowly remapped all functions of my keyboard so that I don't have to leave home row for anything.

I use a Mac and KeyRemap4MacBook to remap my tilde key so that it is escape when no modifiers are pressed, but works normally when any other key is pressed, so I still have tilde (used a lot when programming/consoling), and other shortcuts like cmd+back tic to switch windows within an application.

The question I have is: is it possible for the "esc" key on the poker 2 to act as bac tic/tilde only without an esc key?

You could use software to map esc to tilde and fn+esc to just escape.

Unfortunately, you cannot. However, you can move the tilde key to the right CTRL key which isn't so bad.

You can map the tilde and back tic to different keys without software using the Poker II's built-in programming layer. However, in order to access those functions, you need to hit the "Pn" + key to access it. It's certainly better than holding Fn + Shift + Esc to get a tilde, but it's probably not exactly what you were looking for.

Edit: As mentioned you can map tic and tilde to the right control key, and this is done by flipping one of the dip switches. Another dip switch changes the left Windows key to another Fn key, which is useful since KBC moved the arrow keys to WASD. I use my Poker II with a Mac as well, and it works great. Since I "locked out" what would be the command key in OS X, I used system preferences to map that key to control and the actual control key to caps lock. There's only one program where I use control so it took virtually zero adjustment time.

Honestly though.... if you're programming, I feel like you'd want a key for every input. If you're cool with it though, the Poker is definitely a fun board.

I guess I could probably get used to tilde being right control.  Going to give it a try.

BTW, where would you go to get a full set of good custom keycaps for the poker 2?  I'd want to get a cmd key to swap out for the "win" key, hjkl keys with arrows under, etc.  Basically design it to all of my remappings.

http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/

They can get pricey, but they're just about your only option if you want really specific customizations.

I am not a programmer but a Mac user and I am interested to set this up. I use Command-tilde a lot to cycle between open windows in the same application, eg cycle multiple Word doc or Excel doc. But with Poker 2, I have to do Command-Fn-Esc to do so. I can learn but it is such a chore :P

Is there a way to map Command-Esc as Command-Tilde? I am using KeyRemap4MacBook but have no idea what to do. Thanks.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but you can use Keytweak (a very straight forward remapping option)
I hate everything.

You can do it through the built-in programming layer so you would only have to press the Pn key + one other to get the desired results. I don't have my Poker II any more (just could not get used to the 60% layout), but someone here posted the English owner's manual that has instructions on how to do the programming.

Almost a year late but I just got my Poker II and ran into the same problem you had.

You can solve this using KeyRemap4Macbook (now Karabiner) with these settings:
Code: [Select]
Change Escape Key:
  [x] Escape to Backquote(`)
  [x] Shift+Escape to Tilde(~)

If you want your Escape key, it is now available as Fn+Esc.

Or, you can do 1 better and remap your CapsLock key to send Escape. To do that, in Karabiner:
Code: [Select]
Change Backquote(`) Key:
  [x] Backquote(`) to Escape

Get Seil to remap your CapsLock:
Code: [Select]
Caps Lock
  [x] Change Caps Lock  --- keycode 50
