What lube to use for squeaky keys?
« on: Sat, 05 October 2013, 08:20:17 »
Hi everyone. I recently bought a CM Storm QFR Black and after pressing the backspace button's right side it started making squeaky noises.
I read that synthetic lube is really good and I did found some in my garage but it says it's for bicycles, scooters and motorcycles. Not sure if it's 100% synthetic though.
If it really is, will it work? Will it damage the plastic? I'm from Europe so I don't think I might find Super Lube.

How exactly are you planning on applying the lube?

Good old Q-tips.

But what part on the keyboard were you going to lube?

The metal stabilizer underneath the backspace key. Anyway, I don't know if that bicycle synthetic lube is going to fix it without damaging the plastic. That was my question.

EDIT: So I went and applied the lube and now the backspace key works so much better, I might lube the other big keys some other time.

1.  Any silicon-based oil lubricant is ideal for plastic parts.  A common product is "tire shine" or (preferably) Aerospace 303. Even Armorall will work.

2.  Your biggest problem will be over-lubricating.  Exposed oil -- exposed to outside air, even under a keycap -- tends to collect dust (which is mostly shedded human skin particles)

3.  MX Cherry keycaps are friction-fit, so ideally you want the oil to work down inside the switch itself, but clean it off the top "X" part so your keycaps stay nicely on.

4.  As long as you're going to the bother, this is an excellent time to install O-rings.
