Where in the World are Cherry MX Clears?
« on: Sun, 06 October 2013, 16:53:24 »
Pardon my noobness, but does anyone happen to know where to buy a cherry mx clear keyboard? Every search and site I've come across yields an out of stock and all classifieds are currently sold.

Had hopes for the WASD Code, but it appears it will be out of stock for the next 12 months -- 104 or TKL are fine. Found 1 deck keyboard but I'm not too thrilled with the design.

Also heard of a rumored CM Storm in cherry mx clears (would be fantastic as I love their greens) but haven't found any information regarding their release date.

Thanks!

Wait, isn't that just for the switches only? I believe TS wants a complete board....

There are very few commercial clear boards. You can buy a Leopold with clears from qtan, I think

Wasdkeyboards makes customs with clears but it looks like they're out of stock right now

Thanks for the responses guys.

Yeah the Deck keyboards look pretty ugly and im not too fond of their bottom row configuration. I'm going to have to keep an eye on classifieds.

Qtan has a Leopold FC660M with clears for sale at the moment: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leopold-FC660M-Mechanical-keyboard-Cherry-MX-Clear-switches-W-White-body-/300976993061?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item4613a07325

Personally I really like the layout, but it may not be what you're after. Not a lot of boards with clears for sale at the moment. I would recommend the Ducky's when they are in stock again if you are willing to wait :) Great bang for your buck.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

You can get a cherry board with clears from some german shops, they ship to us. I priced one out at ~$100 the other day.

Someone just had a ducky with clears listed in the classifieds a few days ago.

Perhaps cherry is increasing production on their G80-3497 or G80-1867 with clears.

Or coolermaster is going to pull a logitech?

Maybe  between massdrop ergodoxes, the CODE and 7bit they just didn't have enough to keep up?

There was a post on this somewhere else.  Clears have never really been a main switch.  Probably don't have enough lines and got a big order of another switch which gets in the way of clear production.

When you get it please take a keycap off and take a photo of the switch.  I've heard the Keycools may have counterfeit Clears.

There is a pic on that page but I'd like to see one of the actual board.

hmm... maybe this is why their spec sheet says MX Clears are not tactile:

Quote
Tactile: NO
Clicky: NO

And apparently they have "swiths" instead of "Switches"... so many mistakes on this page.

Sadly and I have no idea if any of the counterfeit talk is true but when there rep first showed up here we mentioned how much we liked clears and they magically had some show up almost immediately.

It's both sad and a bit hilarious that we have to worry about getting counterfeit switches in our keyboards nowadays...

Now I picture Walter White sitting in a factory making fake switches. Then again, I guess his quality would be better than what's currently out there.

Here is the Reddit thread that I found out about the 87s being added to Banggood

http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/1nfaf7/update_on_keycool_87_mx_clears/

"Yes, but if this sells out, Keycool will realise the potential and sell us more stock. This is just a trial run, the first time Keycool has made Clear keyboards.
5 of 84, and 5 of 87"

That's not true.  Keycool made MX Clear 87's back in 2011.  I tried to do a GB on them but qtan got spooked due to potential counterfeit switches.

I bought one for myself and the "Cherry" on the switch seemed a bit warped somehow - as if it were melted.  They also felt significantly lighter than the ones on my Deck Legend.

As I mentioned in the other thread it doesn't make sense to clone Clears when Browns would be so much more profitable.  On the other hand those Keycool Clears felt night and day different from Deck.

Who the hell knows.  Buy and enjoy.

edit: BTW the Clears did end up feeling better than on the Deck.  Like a stiffer Ergo-Clear.

Were they mounted differently or used a different material plate? Makes a tangible difference.

I agree, though, just buy and enjoy. My Ducky had ones with both larger and smaller (so called blobby) logos, but I'm pretty sure they're all legit. Feel identical to me.

I almost ordered a 660 from qtan with clears, but I didn't like the function layer. Personally, if I am to have the page and home/edn buttons on a function layer, I'd much rather them to be mapped to the arrow keys. Makes more sense to me, and easily accessable, than some letter random keys. But then again, I am a big user of those keys, so that I one reason why I stick with a full size board almost all of the time.

The navigation keys are ON the arrows.

I didn't know that. I haven't had the chance to play with one in person, and the legends only showed that K, L, < and > were mapped to those keys, and not that the arrows were as well. I really don't see much of a point of having the others mapped as well, since it is so much easier to do one handed navigation using your right hand. I'd have to reposition my right hand anyway to make use of the letters as navigation since I'd have to reach over for the function key.

Yup saw that, it's definitely concerning. Got my first package from BG on Friday and thankfully everything was okay. Tracking number for the keyboard shows it should be here this week -- I'll update on the status.

Managed to snag the 1 Keycool 87 Clear that went up on Banggood this morning. Saw on reddit theyd be putting 1 up of each some time today

If anyone is interested in the 84 layout there is still one available this morning:

I'm hoping they will eventually produce a ton of these. I don't have the money atm but when I do, I'd love to snag one.

I'd love to snag a clear anything-that-isn't-that-Leopold right now but there just don't seem to be any of them anywhere!

(that ridiculous $350 CODE on ebay doesn't count)

I didn't know that. I haven't had the chance to play with one in person, and the legends only showed that K, L, < and > were mapped to those keys, and not that the arrows were as well. I really don't see much of a point of having the others mapped as well, since it is so much easier to do one handed navigation using your right hand. I'd have to reposition my right hand anyway to make use of the letters as navigation since I'd have to reach over for the function key.
You can use a dip switch to move the Fn key to the left Windows button (which I'm doing right now). Also, it's not hard to hold Fn in the first place if you're using the Home/PgDn/PgUp/End keys since it's right next to the arrow keys.
