Question regarding G80 3000 and das3
« on: Tue, 16 December 2008, 13:08:54 »
These are both blue cherry I know.
Would the key caps be interchangeable. Particularly the space bar and other keys with metal bars.

Also has anyone got a G80 3000 they wouldn't mind looking under the space bar to see if the switch connects in the middle of the space bar or off to the left like a G81.

Thanks guys.

I love you all.

Although the setup of the metal bar is different from stock, here's a pic from lowpoly's spacesaver, which is based on a cutdown G80-3000:

Thanks guys. the space bar is different to the das damn it.
Das has the switch in the centre.
Anyone got any clever ideas to mod one for a das?

I thought you said that velcro could solve these types of problems.

:D It would if cherry installed switches on the pcb with velcro. And I'd highly recommend that ;)

Actually I dont understand why switches have to be soldered down at all, why not put each in a socket? So much easier to swap out bum switches or switch type. There's an idea for lowpoly's new board. His pcb should come with sockets into which the switches go.

I was thinking perhaps a mod to the space bar more sensible :)

Because sockets are less reliable than soldered components, and they cost money.

I would do it this way, and use some copper wire across the switch pins to reinforce the PCB mounting since there are no pads.

To make a square hole in the steel wont be simple though.
My idea was to cut the plastic cross section from the underside of one key and bond it to the centre of the space bar.
Seems like a lot less hassle.

Got an email from Cherry this morning.
I asked if they could sell me some keys separately, they said sorry but no.
However they offered to send some for free!
How cool of them is that.
All I need to do is mod the space bar and I should be good to go!

Are the switches plate mounted in the DAS?

Yes they are, Through the steel plate and into the PCB.
It would be quite tricky and messy (for me) to cut the correct size square hole for the switch. I like working with plastics a lot better :)

That's a pain. I would have preferred drilling and soldering, but your idea about bonding the plastic sounds like it will work. Cutting metal scares me.

Aluminium I'm Ok with but steel is such hard work.
Fingers crossed this works :)

The nice people at Cherry sent me a couple of keys today.
They are shallow compared to the das keys so sit slightly lower than the others.
I did contact the Das keyboard official site who said they are looking into getting replacement key sets in the new year.
