How does it feel to use a topre?
« on: Thu, 10 October 2013, 18:45:26 »
Do you have to fully depress the keys? Does it make a loud sound? I only recently found out they exist.

That depends on whether the boobs are real or not. 45g are like real boobs and I imagine the 55g are like fake boobs. I prefer real boobs.

You don't technically have to depress the key all the way to actuate it, but in practice it's very difficult not to bottom out.  Much more difficult than with MX switches.

The Topre sound is distinctive but not loud -- "thock".  See Youtube for recordings.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You know that gooey stuff you get when you mix cornstarch with water? How it's soft and hard and cold at the same time? For some reason topre switches remind me of that. Super solid yet soft. Like nice breasts :D

Usually it bugs me a bit when people mis-use the term "cloud of boobs" because it originated from MX Red.

However I actually agree that Topre feels more like boobs than MX Red so in this case I guess it's ok lol.

It'll feel a lot like a normal rubber dome keyboard in how the dome collapses...but the stability, smoothness, responsiveness and the sound will make it something completely different.

As people have said, you don't have to bottom out..but you likely will..the keys will actually actuate w/o it which makes you feel like the keys are a bit more responsive...

You'll also get a different feel from the RF, 660c and HHKB....

The Realforce are the best built Topre keyboards. Some (myself included) prefer the HHKB due to its form factor and layout, but it seems to be generally accepted that the Realforces are sturdier and possibly even nicer to type on due to the better construction (the Realforce has a backplate whereas the HHKB doesn't, for example)

HHKB switches are also case mounted. Many prefer this, but overall it's not really the best build quality decision.

I switched from HHKB yesterday to MX reds today.

I am missing the Thorpe, seriously.  These reds just feel cheap in comparison (although the board is fine - KeyCool, just the switches don't feel as sweet).

Or maybe the green EK keycaps have something to do with it.

I don't know if they're made any better..they have a plate...which leads to a different feel in the switches..

The HHKB is very very solid though..it just has a different feel to it because it is case mounted....a slightly softer more forgiving feel than the RF...and definitely more thock to it...

After spending my first few hours with a Topre board just now, I can understand why it's said that it's hard to describe the feeling. It's very unlike any MX switch, even ergo clears. It's a really incredible feeling though, and I can tell even this soon that I enjoy it much more than MX.

I temporarily switched from HHKB to MX reds.  Couldn't stand it!  So I switched to MX blues, partly to see if the Caps Lock LED still works (it does!) but also because my original Ducky hasn't been used for ages.  I am still glancing at the HHKB sitting over in the corner.

Stiffer, snappier...I don't think they're actually more tactile although I can see why others may feel they are..Some people don't think 45g are tactile at all...which is weird because I certainly do...

IMO, 45g in use feels slightly stiffer than browns..but not a lot more...55g feels a lot stiffer than blues...

And oddly enough..HHKB 45g feels slightly stiff than RF 45g...but not by a lot..I'm not sure why either..

MX reds feel loose in comparison.

I tend to bottom out lightly all the time.  MX reds have a hard clack clack clack.

Topre has a soft thock thock thoc.

Yea... Topre switches are super smooth, and super stable. As someone else in the board has mentioned before, the action is very similar to that of hitting piano keys. It just feels like you're pressing an actual key, not a keycap on top of a mechanical switch... if that makes any sense.

If feels overrated.

You must be really bored to keep spreading your "disappointment" about Topre switches in every related thread.

Okay, so I got a Type Heaven a few days ago. I pulled it out of the box and immediately hated it. It felt more... mushy than the Cherry's I've come to love. I almost put it back in the box immediately. But I figured, '**** it. MechanicalKeyboards has a 30 day return policy. If I still don't like it, I can return it then. I'm not going to say it's completely left my mind (that tenkeyless Shine with reds is SO tempting), but I'm really coming to like it. It's much more predictable than MX Black, and while I'm not fully used to the sound, it's growing on me. Everything about it is growing on me. Do wish Keycaps were cheaper though :\

This - exactly.

Use it for a few minutes and meh.

Use it for a few days and :)

Use it for a month and never look back ;)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs.
