How Can I Replicate the Dolch Look?
« on: Sun, 03 November 2013, 23:35:33 »
I'm looking to replicate the dolch keycap look for cheaper than what it would cost to actually buy a dolch board. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

There has to be. It doesn't have to be 100% the same.

Well, you can get black doubleshots from various MX and MY boards all week... and you could probably pair it with the dark grey alphabetic keys from one of the older group buys.  Round 1 had them, for example.

Can you link me to the round 1 keycaps you are talking about? I can't seem to find any info on them.

For one, that's not dolch.

For two, it's still cheaper to buy a dolch board on ebay than to try and find any of the SP replicas.  You might be able to get it from originative, but it won't be cheaper, either.

For three, why are you asking a question and then arguing with the answer because it wasn't the one you wanted to hear?

Sorry. Wasn't aware. That's what it was called on DanGWanG's blog which is why I called it that.

I'm not even looking for replicas though. I'm just looking for keycaps that have roughly the same look. The gray and dark grey. Or it could even be grey and black. Just something close.

I wouldn't call it arguing.. Arguing has a really negative connotation to it. I wasn't arguing at all. I just do not think it's possible for there not to be something at least SIMILAR to the "Dolch" look out there with the huge assortment of keycaps there are in the world.

Edit: Are there any white on grey keycap sets that are easy to get a hold of? I wouldn't mind that look if I were to combine it with any set of black mods.

again, sourcing from various places will get you to the same price as a full set from ebay/here.

If you keep looking, you might eventually find a cheap Dolch unit on eBay.

Or you could keep trying to nudge various group buys that are soliciting colour votes towards Dolch, but as there have been a couple of Dolch GBs recently you might be waiting a while.

So, try both approaches - eventually you should get lucky.

Lol, yes it is, homie. The mods are a bit dark, which means they MIGHT be black, but those are Dolch alphas for sure. You can see the scooped F and J. Using a moogle of course.

I'm not entirely sure. My thought is the lighting is bad. Dan liked his rare items, and didn't strike me as the kind of guy to mix Dolch like that, especially when they were as desired as they were back then.

No he stated that is what they were somewhere.  I can't find the exact post.

The 87 key set is winkey...

Strange, 87 wasn't in the drop-down when I looked. That or I'm just blind. Thanks for pointing that out!

Look on Ebay for an old sniffer unit,
Some model numbers are the G80-1813 HFU and the G80-1813 HDU :p
Or buy from sherry, his set is wonderful

I think it's worth asking "What board he has, and what he's aiming for look-wise."

If you've got a full-sized board, buying a Dolch board will lead to frustration as many of the modifiers will be the wrong size.

Well for the price :p

If it was possible to get a similar look for cheaper than why not. Seems like it isn't though.

If money are issue then screw keycaps, life comes first. But if money are not issue you will regret it big time trust me. By the time you end up trying to mix and match colors from SP sets, or just buying Dolch pac with used keycaps will cost you at least $80 shipped, then you need Moogle, expect Dolch Moogle to be good $30+ because its hard to find ( if you can find one....)

By the time you know, your view of getting cheaper look alike Dolch caps will crush down because you will be hitting $100 price mark and them keys will be used. Look at it this way, if you have ANSI board you will only spend $120 for 104 keys and around $100 for 87 keys.

Your call but don't waste your money for something that will never be and will always stay as wanna be, my moto is buy once, pay the asking price and use it for long time,  instead of buying 2nd hand stuff and then end up not really using them at all.

This will get you the Dolch look with new keycaps with no shine now.

Or you can wait and see if someone sells a set in classifieds for less than this (unlikely, unless they are falling apart with shine), or find an original Dolch set on eBay really cheap (also unlikely, and would cost you more to get additional keys to suit modern keyboard).
