Model M Issues
« on: Fri, 08 November 2013, 01:43:01 »
Well, they aren't really issues, more just like minor (very minor) inconveniences. I've had a model M for a while now but haven't been able to use it due to the fact that I own a laptop which does not have a PS/2 port. I got a PS/2 to USB adapter in the mail today which I purchased from the geekhack temp store. The adapter mentioned is this: http://www.idinnovations.com/usb%20adaptors.html Anyway, I attached it to my model m and plugged it into my USB port and it installed the firmware etc etc. The keyboard works fine and all the keys are functioning as they should be, but I noticed two things.

1. The indicator lights for Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock are not lighting up. I know for a fact that they are working as they briefly light up when I plug the adapter in, but do simply turn off and do not respond at all to their respective keys being pressed.

2. I seem to be able to achieve 2KRO over USB. I don't know if this is due to the adapter used, or because that's just how model m's are.

Thoughts?

Give this a go from clickykeyboards which has proven to be compatible with IBM Model M's, I haven't had any problem with mine in regards to what you're reporting.

I have one of those adapters as well,  it has the same behaviour.  All the keys work, so I just stuck with it.
M's are limited to 2KRO because of the membrane design,  It's the way they are.

A keyboard like that draws a lot of power, especially going through adapters.

I sometimes think that we are just asking too much for the lights, especially if you are running on battery power.

Alright, glad to know it's not just me. I'll stick with this adapter since the keyboard works fine and it's doesn't really bother me.
