Take off all the keycaps.  Disassemble the keyboard (take the PCB + plate out of the case).  Spray some high content alcohol (the higher the better, at least 91%) all over to get all the visible coffee out.  Dry really thoroughly (wait a long time, I'd wait up to a week).  Plug in the cable, see if it works.  If it doesn't work well, try spraying more alcohol actually into the switches or even good quality contact cleaner.

Haha I just spilled milk on my GON.  I ended up taking the whole damn thing apart because there was gunk in the stabs which were under the plate.

For cleaning alcohol I recommend stuff like metholated spirits. You might need a fair amount of it considering you have fed your keyboard a full cup of the liquid and realistically the actual PCB is where the important stuff that matters the most when it comes to cleaning the affected electrical components.

Yeah, I was more worried about gumming up the switches since I've never gone that deep into disassembly but hopefully it mostly poured around that part.  It was definitely rising up between the keys.  It poured out a good long while.  I'll have to start using a sippy cup :)

I've got the board out now although I still can't get the case to completely come apart.  Don't want to break it.  I just have to get some alcohol.  I think what I have at home isn't high enough.

thanks for all the help so far.

The best course of action is to buy a new keyboard and keep drinks away from it.

You might be able to salvage the one you have - but you will always be wondering.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

There's a screw you remove under the Warranty sticker and if it's a full size Filco, a couple more screws.  Then use a credit card or the like to slide between the top cover and the bottom tray along the front and back.  There are plastic tabs on the top cover that lock into the openings in the bottom tray.  By sliding something flat along the sides, you pop those tabs out.  Then the top can be removed easily.

Supposedly sweetened coffee or any sweetened drinks will make the components sticky. Even if you only drink unsweetened coffee, there is still a bit of sugar like substance from the milk that will make the components sticky.

As for alcohol when it comes to cleaning, the higher the alcohol content I suppose the quicker the liquid evaporates into thin air so to speak. I personally am unsure if using slightly lower alcohol content based cleaners will suffice but one still needs to properly let the alcohol to fully evaporate and not leave residue behind.

That's what i figured reading the deskthority wiki on it.  I think it's just a tight fit.  I had to torque it when I bought it to fix a wobble.  I'll work at it.  It's the center that is being stubborn.

I have more keyboards already!   Probably the DAS will be pinch hitting next week or this IBM next to me. I'm using the worst flat keyed dell right now because it was the only USB handy and i didn't want to reboot.   If the Filco died, I'd shell out for another immediately.  I'd want the blues back and i'd worry I wouldn't like another brand as much.

Drinks ALWAYS get spilled. It is just a matter of time. The more cautious you are the longer it takes.
No drinks near the keyboard is the ONLY way.

I tolerate spill-proof travel mugs. If you oups them, they will unlikely spit coffee in your keyboard.

Back to normalish.   WD40 was used unadvisedly in the Shift procedure to clear the stickiness and blown out.  Chances were taken.

I sure hope that is not another cup full of liquid again!  :))   Just kidding.

Though as rowdy said, if that was the cup that held roughly the same amount of liquid as the one you have spilt onto your keyboard, you might not have much chance of rescuing.

Bit of a shame how your keyboard tried to taste a bit what it is like of"being human" and ends up suffering.  :p

Sadly boys, that is a medium I mostly finished and only set there for the picture.  The actual spill was a large and the amount of the spill was probably that cup if I tipped it upside down and drained it from full.  Yes, I nailed the landing on that spill.

However, the keyboard was working fine after I put it together today.  The shift keys always had a bit of stick to them even when unsullied but I got them going pretty good.  The left just needed to work in.  The big one seems  to be better than before after a little extra attention.  See how it works after a week or so.  I'll switch out my DAS after the break.  The browns got some work again.  Not using it except as a loaner/substitute.  Reds at home, blues at work, IBM on the backups in both places.  It was my first though so I feel bad for it sometimes.

At least it is a lesson learnt either way.  :thumb:

Only time will tell has the damage work its way through your keyboard. In either case it seems you have backups as you have already pointed that out so yeah.
