How to package a keyboard for shipping
« on: Mon, 25 November 2013, 22:56:04 »
What's the standard quality for member to member shipping for keyboards?

I was thinking of getting a box with ~1" around the retail box (i've always been a stickler for keeping retail boxes for all my stuff) and padding that with peanuts/bubblewrap (whichever is cheaper).

would that lead to damage or complaints about cheaping out?

I've received a keyboard packaged as such and it arrived OK. Never shipped one out so sorry, can't give advice on this, except:

Anything is better than applying postage directly to the retail box and shipping it to me - that pisses me off!

Use a few layers of bubble wrap around the retail box and fill any cavities in the second box with styrofoam  peanuts.  That's the standard shipping procedure if there is one around here.

If the box has enough volume, styrofoam peanuts are the best at padding because they move and give. Double-boxing with peanuts in-between is wonderful, but all shippers have voodoo-like formulas factoring both size and weight, so increasing size can cost as much as increasing weight, especially when you cross volume threshold points.
From the US Constitution, Article 1, Section 8 :

To provide for calling forth the Militia  to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

Generally I make a custom box to the size of the items I'm shipping.

For packing material, what I like to use is the "heavy duty" bubblewrap that can't break. One layer of that between the boxes should protect most things well.

The warehouse at my work sends and receives a lot of stuff, so they are always recycling lots of packing material and boxes. I grab the better stuff when I can. Currently that's newair IB by sealedair (who also, apparently, own the bubblewrap brand)

But doubleboxing is excellent.

That's why I did for RMA

Just say NO to ABS keycaps

I think the part of the keyboard most susceptible to damage are the corners, so I usually bubble wrap the entire keyboard once over, add a few layers to the four corners, add large bubble padding (from amazon orders) into a large flat rate gameboard box, add the keyboard, make sure the keyboard BARELY moves and add some large bubble padding on top.
