dorkvader's rolling KB meetup
« on: Sat, 30 November 2013, 15:46:04 »
After my very awesome roadtrip not long ago, I plan to do a similar thing on my way up to see my parents for Christmas. I still need to talk to the bosses (I have 4) about time off, but I should be good to go a few days before Christmas.

I'll be going up to Lowell, MA (where my parents live) and would love to spend some time meeting with anyone along the way (or pretty close). I'll probably be available Saturday the 21'st or Sunday the 22'nd.

Since I'm not flying, I'll be able to bring most of my KB collection. I also have some KB's I need to sell, so I'll bring those as well (why not?)

Get to try:
Cherry (most types)
Beam spring!
Model F
Model M
4704 model F (metal case)
lots of crazy hall effect
Tripleshot keycaps
etc.

Here's roughly my route:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=roanoke%2C%20VA%20to%20lowell%2C%20MA

Once I get a list of people interested and available, I'll sort them in order, and plan a trip around seeing as many as possible.

I'll also be coming back, so I am sure I can see some people then, too. I'll likely be returning the 26'th or 27'th.

Post here (or PM me) if you want to hang out for an hour or two. If it's near a mealtime, I'd love to grab a bite as well. Depending on how many people I can meet up with, I might have to ask around for nearby lodging or a spare couch.

Looking forward to this!

Interest list:
Tacticalstache (NYC)
Booost (NYC)
 (nyc)
Photoelectric (Boston)
127001 (Boston)
CliB (CT)
Travellerr (CT)
metalliqaz (CT)
Possible other stop in CT
DrinkTea (Philadelphia)

Tentative plans:
Drive up and visit NYC and CT on the way up. On the way back visit upstate NY. Not sure when philadelphia gets put in there.

Idea #1 Spend day 1 in PA and NYC, day2 in NYC and CT. upstate NY on the way home

----
The plan:

Get up early Saturday morning. Drive and get breakfast / early lunch with drinktea in PA
Get into NYC and meet up with tacticalstache for a bit. Then meet up with boost and others (?) somewhere.
find somewhere to sleep
get up, meet anyone I missed in NY and head to CT.
Meet up with people in CT on Sunday

Drive home.

Meet with photoelectric on Monday during the day.

On the way back: meet up with CPTbadass either late the 26'th or early the 27'th. Hang out for a while then head home.
Get home late(ish) the 27'th
Go to work the 28'th.

---
More detailed trip itinerary
Leave at about 5AM saturday morning
Drive to drinktea's place. Arrive around lunchtime
Hang out for about an hour
Drive to NYC and hang out with another GH'er for an hour or so
Visit tacticalstache in NYC for a street dog
Go to eastern NYC area to visit booost and friends

Find somewhere to sleep and sleep

Go visit people in CT Sunday.

Hrm, Lowell...  I'm a "few" miles away in Boston.  But I don't drive ;(  Also my keyboard collection is most uninteresting at the moment, 1 LZ-GH and 1 Ducky Shine.

Yeah I posted about it on GH and DT and it even got necro'd once and almost no-one noticed it. I've probably only made about 10 topics on my time here on GH, so when I make a topic, I make sure it's interesting.
Here's the topic if you want to read through it http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41396.0

Pass through NYC!!
I will be passing through NYC! if there are enough GH'ers maybe we can have a larger meetup somewhere near there.

I will be passing through that area as well if you want to meet up! It's ok if you don't have many kbs, you can look at what I've got, or we can just hang out.

This is just to convince me to be more social finally; the KB's are just an excuse.

I'm also in the Boston area, maybe we could do a mini meet up somewhere around there if people are interested. I have a few boards people might want to check out.

Driving right through CT I see...

Stop by my house. Pool table and a bar in my basement.

It's only like 30-45 mins out of your way once you hit Hartford, depending on traffic.

And if you're feeling REALLY adventurous, you could stop by MW's house. His basement is even more terrifying IRL... :))

I plan to go through CT on the way up, but since I'm not local, I don't think I can plan a meetup. Maybe the easiest thing is to just all drive to the house of somebody in the middle. I'd be glad to help plan and manage interest though!

this IBM displaywriter

I'll be trying to sell some of my KB's I don't really use. Probably some cherry, and uncommon stuff. I want to hang on to the hall effect until I convert it, but I'll be wanting to sell one or two of those sometime in the future.

I'm in Philadelphia, but that seems a bit out of the way for you. Bummer.
It's only 20 minutes out of the way. I can make this happen if you're still interested.

So disappointed on your route. Hey, come this way. It is way nicer and we can offer you all sorts of different food and buy your keyboards. I am so jealous of the eastern guys now (for those keyboards).

That would be awesome. Let me doublecheck the dates and get back to you. Hopefully there's at least one more person in the area to make it worth your while.

Even if it were just you, it would be worth it. Nevertheless, the more the merrier!

The main downside about meeting with so many people is we'll either have to meet in a group or keep the meetings short (or I'll add a day to my route).

How does this look?
I counter your proposal with this one!
I plan to visit my brother in the UP sometime later. If I do drive up, I'll stop by. Though I may want to ask about local lodging or a spare couch.

It's ok, I'll probably run into you if I go to keycon west. Even still, you can go to HaaTa's Kiibohd meetups.

OP updated I think.

I could hook you up with a couch near Racine, west of Milwaukee, Appleton,  or Eagle River (west of your desired route).  I either have family, close friends, or a cabin in all of those locations.

Feel free to let me know when you plan to make that trip and we can talk more.   :)  Depending on the timing of it, I may be out of the state but hopefully not.

Due to a last minute scheduling change (that I sneakily made go in my favor) I am now off the 21'st and will be available more of that weekend. Will update proposed itinerary later.
