Removing Keyboard Feet
« on: Thu, 05 December 2013, 09:27:25 »
Hey Again.

I have an issue with one of my keyboards feet, the right one, and I was wondering how you go about removing them.

They are Filco feet, by the way.

The flip-out feet?  You can't just fold it back in?

The problem is the one on the right seems to be weaker, it  gets pushed back in too easily when i move my keyboard forward slightly, I want to remove them so I can check out what is up with them.

Yeah, i spotted some new feet but as i said, the actual removal is the bit i cannot work out. I cant push it to one side to let the other out so i am clueless.

Judging from the keyboard feet of Filco Majestouch 2:

I guess you might be able to remove it with some sort of a hobby knife. It won't be easy if you want to remove it cleanly/perfectly but I guess that is one way to do it. Depending on how handy you are with fine work, even a stanley knife might do it. If you prefer more precision and would like to hold the knife like as if you are holding a pen I would personally recommend one of these:

Ideally the thinner and sharper the knife is the better. I think all these keyboard feet (regardless of brand) are all stuck on by some sort of glue (superglue maybe?) and they are fairly resistant to being pulled off for quite awhile (over long durations).

First I would try to attempt "peeling" the feet away from the base of the keyboard. If the feet still refuses to budge then it is glued with some sort of adhesive which maybe really invulnerable to peeling and would then require a blade to sort of cut it off. First try cutting along the sides with a thin (but sharp) knife and then again try peeling it off. If the feet refuses to budge. You may need slowly peel the keyboard feet off via peeling with one hand and sort of poking around the edges for instance with another hand. Ultimately if the keyboard is stuck well onto the base of the keyboard, your only result will be nothing short of an "unclean" result (where you may result into cutting the feet in halves for instance in a bid to and get the well glued feet off the keyboard.

At least that is how I understand it heh. Maybe the keyboard when sort of tapped with a finger forward from the centre the right side of the keyboard would move further than the left?

Assuming it is Filco, right where they go into the slot, you should be able to squeeze one side in and lift that edge of the foot up, then repeat with the other side, then they should lift out.

Replacements here if you break one: http://www.keyboardco.com/product/filco-legs-one-pair.asp

The picture on that page will also give you an idea what to expect.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
