Cherry clears: are they tiring for modifier keys?
« on: Sun, 22 December 2013, 17:41:28 »
Some people like Cherry clears because the resistance of such switches increases sharply after the actuation point, thus making bottoming out difficult. However, I wonder what happens when you do want to keep a key pressed, as is the case with modifiers. I guess that in such case either your fingers will have to apply much pressure to keep a modifier down, or they will comfortably apply enough pressure to stay below the release point. Which is it? Would Cherry clears tire your fingers quickly if you had to make heavy usage of modifier keys?

Thanks.
A long space bar... what a waste of space!

I've never experienced this with any switch.

I have not felt them as being too hard as modifiers, no.

I wonder what it would be like on a Ducky Clear/Brown combo keyboard, though where the regular keys are Browns and the modifiers are Clears.

I think clears are excellent for modifiers.

I currently use nothing but Clears. They are awesome.

I'm using Code at home and they are fine with a all Clears switch including mods. Very useful when playing Pinball, ha ha, when I have to use the mod keys heavily and for holding balls with the flippers.

I also have a KBTalking ONI which is brown and I modded that with Clears on the mod keys - so it's a hybrid like the Ducky. I don't use this as much but they are even better in my opinion because of the heavier mods.

By "pressed" you mean all the way down?  Because with Cherry switches, you can just go down halfway to actuate.  So you don't really need to bottom out with Clears, which is facilitated by the increased amount of force past actuation.  But Clears aren't really that tough at all anyway.  My HP rubberdome I'm typing on right now is as tough as stock Clears.  I've not tried buckling springs, but I feel like they'd be more of a workout vs. Clears.  I'm a fan of stock Clear switches and I also like light kinds like Browns.

He meant holding it down for a long period of time, not just pressing to actuate. For example, holding SHIFT for a minute with the pinky and he felt that holding a Clear switch SHIFT with pinky finger for long period of time will tire the hand compare to say a red or brown.

I understand, but you still don't need to press all the way down to hold.  Unless the primary task is to do a LOT of typing daily, essay style, I don't think Clears are heavy.  I have very thin and long fingers, for reference.  For frequent heavy typing sessions, I'd go with Browns and similar.

I have / had a Ducky hybrid (Tactile mix special edition) with browns on alphas and clears on the modifiers. It was tiring for my pinkies, didn't like the feel (the shift keys were the main culprits). Clear is great on space (and maybe enter) if you have browns on alphas. Each to their own, though.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
