DSA 3d model?
« on: Mon, 30 December 2013, 20:52:38 »
Anyone have a good 3d model for a cherry mx DSA key cap, or a DCS set? We are getting a peachy printer at the hackerspace and I want to try running a set of keys with it.

How long would a set of keys (~87) take to print on a 3D printer?

Well, you can't on an extruder which is what most people have, the tops would be flat since you can't have more than a 45deg over hang you would have to print them upside down. That is why I suspect you don't see it much at all. The peachy is a resin based printer so it can do much more aggressive over hangs and higher detail/smoother prints so... I honestly have no idea, it is brand new gear - we are getting a beta. I anticipate being able to do a number of keys at the same time, maybe an hour or two per run, who knows - if I can find a 3d model we will find out. (if it works, it opens interesting potential for all kinds of custom keys, and the peachy is slated to go to market for only $100 bucks so...)

This may or may not be of use, but I made some (semi-accurate?) models of DSA keycaps, sans stem. Maybe it can get you started. For 3d printing I'm guessing you would want control over the contact surfaces anyhow. Here's one in obj format if you want to try it out.

"sans stems" is a funny way of saying "without stems".

I found a set of DCS keys R1-R4 over on reddit as well. I will try running a bunch of different styles when the printer comes in to see what I can get made. I got the hard, soft, and rubbery resins all in "natural" which is almost clear so should be an interesting experiment with the new printer. We shall see. I will pop a new post once I run some keys. If anyone has models they want me to try post them and I will try running them, standard keys or custom stuff I don't care. (If the custom keys turn out worth a damn I will mail them to you)

^^ This. It's a "loan word", originally French, but due to being used a lot has become part of the English language. English is difficult language to use well, but amazingly expressive if it is. Some British magazine journalists do a good job and it makes reading their articles a joy. Sometimes they say so much in so few words.

Could you perhaps provide a link to the DT cap models? I have an interest in possibly CNC machining some in future.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
