Neat surface mount DAC proto with CNC engraving
« on: Wed, 01 January 2014, 14:44:16 »
Over the new year my father and I made a prototype surface mount circuit board using a CNC engraving machine.  The assembled DAC works very well and we might turn this into a small product for mobile listening. Here are some pics of the assembled prototype.

Ask me anything about this project or equipment, and I'll do my best to answer.

How much?

Tough to say at this point.  I would be assembling these myself and we are looking into making cases with the engraver.  How much would you want to spend on something like this?

$30-$40. I don't own a DAC yet so I was thinking this is a good cheap entry level DAC

I still can't comment on a price, but I can tell you it matches up pretty well against the modi.  That's pretty neat considering this device can only operate in the 16 bit domain for the time-being.

wow looks great! I've been interested in DIY DACs sicne the alien was relevant. I still need to finish making my AMB gamma2's

In terms of size it reminds me a lot of the grubdac / skeletondac projects. Can you comment on the SNR and other features?

this is very close to an alien actually.
