WASD v2 / CODE vs Filco MJ2?
« on: Thu, 02 January 2014, 23:40:02 »
I'm curious about the differences in build quality between the WASD v2, the WASD CODE, and the Filco Majestouch 2. First of all, what's the real difference between the WASD v2 and the CODE? On the code site it really doesn't give any specifics on the difference besides the fact that its backlit and comes with clear switches (or at least the latest iteration did). I'm pretty sure that Costar makes both boards, right? Costar also makes the QFR and the MJ2 but the MJ2 has a superior build quality. Does the MJ2 have superior quality to the WASDs, as well? I was initially really interested in getting a barebones WASD v2, or even the code but when I purchased my board last month neither of the WASDs were in stock. I think the only main difference that I can tell between the WASD v2 and the Filco is that the WASD has a detachable cable. Is there anything else? If not, then I can't see a reason for someone to get the filco over the v2. If the CODE is the exact same thing as a v2, but with backlights then, assuming the next iteration has more switch options available, I'd have to imagine that the code would be the best choice. All of the aforementioned is assuming price isn't a factor.

Thanks!

For that matter, I am also now questioning how is this different with even a KBTalking ONI or a CM Storm? All 87-boards function the same - it's the switch that matters and if all are using Cherry, why bother paying so much more for a Filco. I owned a Code, mind you, but now that I have about 5 keyboards I wonder why I didn't start with something cheaper as it is the feel of the switch I am going for, not the board itself.

One thing I know that is also a different between Code and Filco - Code has detachable USB cables while Filco doesn't.

Also, there are a few threads here on this topic.. so search is a good friend of yours.. or Google.

Well I think the difference between WASD V2 and CODE is just non-backlit and backlit.

As for WASD V2 and Filco I think WASD V2 has detachable cable also has dip switch for dvorak and some other different typing layouts.  It also has function layer for volume up volume down... etc I believe.

If my memory serves me correctly I think now WASD V2 also has dual layer PCB so same as Filco.  So at this point if the price is the same then I'd say go for WASD V2.

But typically shipping is a concern for WASD V2 so normally it's actually cheaper for me to buy Filco from local store.  Another thing to keep in mind is that Filco has beige/white models, in my opinion beige/white case looks better with most custom keycaps.

So it's up to you.  :P

Good point on the volume up and down. The Code has volume control on the Page Up and Page Down key. Makes it very easy to remember. It also has a Game mode. Press Scroll Lock and you cannot press the Windows button. Useful for gaming. As pointed, it has DVORAK and Colemark and also a Mac mode. All these are done via DIP switch. This was enough to convince me that it's better than Filco.

I am also eye-ing the bare bone WASD V2 Cherry MX Green but I can afford the shipping to Malaysia. The bare bone green is US$95 but shipping is already US$50!

Yeah shipping was pretty much the deal breaker for me too.  Otherwise I think the barebone WASD V2 is probably ones of the best choice right now.

Though CM Storm QFR / XT are still undefeated in the bang for the buck category lol.

In a crazy attempt, I emailed WASD to see if they can source for alternative shipping and I am willing to take the risk of one without tracking and insurance. I wonder how much lower will that be.

One of the advantage for Matias is that they could ship out of their partners in Taiwan. So any international order is just us$15 for shipping. That makes Matias keyboard very, very attractive!

The WASD V2 is single layer while the Code is dual layer.
