Filco - Possible to replace an ANSI layout with an ISO?
« on: Tue, 14 January 2014, 10:50:29 »
Hi everyone,

This might be a really weird question and probably has an easy answer, but I couldn't find anything regarding this topic.
(that probably means it won't work, but I don't like to have any uncertainty!)

So, basically my question is the following:

If I'd buy a Filco Ninja Majestouch 2 with an ANSI layout, can I then replace it with an ISO (azerty, belgian period - which I'd order from WASD keyboards) layout?

I'm asking this because I could get a Filco with quite a discount, but they unfortunately do not sell the layout I require...
The difference is mainly the return key and the left shift button, other than the obvious character and symbol differences.

Thank you for confirming the possibility!

I know the plate wouldn't support it because it wasn't cut for that layout. Not sure about the PCB as I haven't taken any of my Filco's apart. They might be interchangeable between iso/ansi, but they'd have to be designed that way.

Regardless it's going to cost you time to solder/de-solder everything and also money for the new plate. So you'll have to take that into account :)

I believe the PCB does support both layouts, so no modding would be required there. The plate, however, definitely doesn't and would require a lot of modding. Alternatively you could get a custom plate laser cut.

It's probably best to just get an ISO board though.

Consider getting an old ISO Cherry G80 series board. Cheap and high quality. The ISO DE ones are extremely common.. look for a model like the G80-1501HAD which is probably one of the cheapest models and also has NKRO. These boards also have high quality thick doubleshot keycaps, but since you'd be replacing them (Belgian AZERTY G80 boards are extremely, extremely rare) with belgian layout caps I guess that doesn't matter much..

Thank you very much for the replies!

I will probably just get an ISO layout Filco and replace them with a belgian azerty ISO layout, from WASD.

Thanks again!

Bear with me while I ask this.

If I replace the ansi keycaps on my keyboard with ISO, the main difference I am thinking about is the enter key. That would end up taking the place of the "| \" key. I would guess that it would press both Return and "|\" at the same time. Could you use key mapping software to make it only register a Return, and do a remap of somekey+somekey to type the "| \" key?

Let me know which part of my logic is wrong. I am sure something I said doesn't make sense.
