Changing LED mode doesn't work.
« on: Tue, 14 January 2014, 16:29:11 »
Hi there,
I finished building a Korean custom about a week ago (it's an MX mini ps2avr by Kailet).
Everything was working pretty well, but after building it and replacing some non-functioning LEDs something strange happened; Suddenly nothing happens I try to change the LED mode. The function worked before. Now it's stuck on a dim setting that I can't change.
There is a function to enable num lock, caps lock and lock FN2. Num lock makes the one LED shine bright like it's supposed to, but all the other LEDs are still unaffected. Caps lock acts the same way. FN2 lock makes the LED on the num lock button blink, and it blinks in both num lock and non num lock mode. Bright when num lock is on and dim when it's off.
Edit: The num lock LED actually blinks bright when FN2 lock is on.
Edit2: link to the pcb http://winkeyless.kr/62

Every LED works and every switch responds perfectly; well not perfectly as the FN+caps lock combo doesn't change the LED modes. Oh yeah, caps lock+FN is supposed to change the LED mode.

Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong?

edit: This doesn't matter anymore as I scrapped the board and moved on.

I have two different colored LEDs on the board. Blue and purple (pink), the blue is on the alphas and the pink is on the perimeter, so I changed all the resistors from 910ish to 1.3k ish for the purple/pink LEDs. Suffice to say that did not make a difference.

Any ideas would be good as I don't understand why it wouldn't work when all the keys work and the combination of FN+other keys work.

Upgraded the firmware and tried moving the LED key to a couple of different keys and combinations; it didn't help.

LED the wrong way round?

Could be any of a number of things. Best to take the board to someone who is good with electronics, I reckon, so they can diagnose the actual item. A bit hard over the 'nets.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Could the LEDs be shorting out with the case (assuming it's metal/aluminium)? Try putting some lining in between to see if that works...otherwise I'm not sure D:.

OObly, all the LEDs are working so they aren't the wrong way. I'm pretty sure a fair few people would have a few ideas on this forum without having to touch the components :). I've diagnosed the electronics myself and everything is drawing power the way it should. There are no breaks anywhere, so I can only assume that something has broken near the controller.

Dreamre, I've checked that plenty to be sure, and there is no short. Everything is working fine except that I can't change the LED modes :).

I guess I'll just replace the components around the controller if I can get my hands on those.

if you replaced those resistors after you did the swap you may have drawn too much current and fried the port on the controller (depending how the controller/backlit is set up)

Also I'd say try checking the switches to make sure they are working.

I dunno meng.

Are you sure you used the correct firmware file? There should be one in there for _NKRO.something or something like that.

Download from here: http://winkeyless.kr/17

kmiller8, no resistors swapped. It's extremely strange that every single switch and LED works but that the changing of the LED modes has stopped working. I'll just try to get replacement parts for it to see if that will fix it.

digi, I have the newest and correct firmware :). Tried different firmwares and tried moving the mode change button and combination without that fixing the problem.

No worries, digi. Thanks for trying ^^.

I'll see if I can get the will to do that later, millerbro :).
