Deciding between Filco MJ2 and Ducky Zero
« on: Fri, 17 January 2014, 00:37:09 »
Hello, recently my CM QFR (red) died on me so i'm looking for another keyboard. I don't need backlight so I have narrowed my choices down to the Filco MJ2 and Ducky Zero. They are both in a similar price range shipped (110-120AUD), so i'm wondering what are your opinions. Generally I have heard Filco's are good overall but some say the Ducky is actually better so i'm just having some trouble deciding. I will be trying out MX browns this time :P

I would say the Filco Majestouch 2. The Ducky Zero is more of a budget line that Ducky makes, unlike the Shine and G2 Pro series. :)

Well... I have no idea how helpful this would be, since I don't have Ducky Zero... But I just got my Filco MJ2, and it's quite nice. It is much better than the other Cherry MX board I had, which I believe was based on one of the Keycool boards.

Quoting AUD, you in Australia?

Where can you get Filco for max $120?

Also, Filco is generally considered better, but is also generally much more expensive than Ducky Zero.

I have tried both and Filco is a bit better in typing feel and better built. Though that tiny bits cannot justify the price difference, I still bought the Filco and never regret it.

EDIT: If you find them at the same price, then Filco definitely.

Not really.

The general consensus is, Filco has a higher quality build than Ducky.  In the last few years, Ducky has been catching up, but if you put a MJ2 and a Shine 3 next to each other, most people would agree that the Filco feels more solid.  Usually, the choice comes down to features (if you want backlit, get the Ducky) or price (Ducky is cheaper).

The Zero is built in China (whereas the Shine 3 is built in Taiwan) and is considered to be a notch down (and cheaper still) compared to the Shine 3.

IIRC, the Zero isn't even backlit - if that's the case and the prices are similar (as a post mentioned earlier, the prices you listed look suspect, especially for the MJ2), I can't come up with a reason to buy a Zero over a MJ2.

At a similar price shipped, the Filco will be the better board. Really solid.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I have two Ducky Shine (version 1).  Both are great boards, both still going strong after a year of use - one gets daily use at work.

But yes, for the same money, a Filco would give you that little bit extra quality.

That is why it is surprising to find a Ducky Zero and Filco priced about the same - usually Filco is about $170 and Ducky Zero is $95 (in Australia, anyway).

For that price it would be wrong not to get to get the Filco, the only real drawback of the boards in my opinion are the price but considering you are getting it on the cheap it would be crazy not to get it.

Only thing about Filco is that the legends on the keycaps might have faded a bit.  You might be looking at a replacement keycap set at some stage (but then you probably would be anyway).

Shouldn't the proper comparison (tier) be between a ficlo mj2 and a ducky pro g2 or the new premier or the shine 3 if you want backlights?
Not sure why you're comparing a MJ2 to a ducky zero.
They're not in the same "tier".

+1

You'll be comparing the premier and the MJ2. Having not used the premier yet, I can't say it's better, but the MJ2 is my favorite keyboard and I dislike PBT.

This Ducky 2108 I am typing on is built like a tank. I can't imagine the Filco being that much better than the Ducky. I wasn't really impressed with the Ducky on paper until I played with one in person. It's a very solid and well built board.
