General thoughts on Leopold TKL
« on: Fri, 17 January 2014, 17:53:29 »
Hello again, what do you guys think about the FC700R in general? Like the built quality and if there are any notable problems.

There aren't any notable problems. It's a fairly good quality board, just hard to get.

Do you think the Ducky G2 Pro PBT is better because the key caps are dye-Sublimated? They are the same price on mechkb for AU

My review on it can be found here.

I really like it with Cherry/GMK ABS caps. very solid board.

I regard the graphite FC700R one of the sexiest 'boards you can get (customs don't count ;)).

The only problem I've found with it is with the printing on the key caps and the coating (if any?) used to keep the legends from fading. It can fade somewhat quickly (but not completely) compared to say... some pad printed keys on the keyboards in the workplace.

Here's an image of my FC700R after about 6 months of daily use: http://www.iforce.co.nz/View.aspx?i=2uyaxnxs.04p.jpg

I've had two Leopold FC700R's and sadly both ended up with key chattering. The most recent one has chattering on about 5 keys. :(
KBC Poker - Red switches. Noppoo Choc Mini - Black switches. Leopold FC700R (White) - Blue switches. Ducky YOTD - Brown switches. Razer BW - Blue switches and rusted.

Although many space bars these days have extra stems - should fit ok?

AFAIK, the FC700R still doesn't like custom spacebars, unless you like modding one yourself.

Even those spacebars, like SP's universal one with 6 stems doesn't fit on the FC700R at all (though I believe it will fit the FC200R which also has a non-standard spacebar, if I remember correctly).

You're correct, the EK universal doesn't fit on the 700R but does on the 200R. I tried putting a universal on my 700R and was sad.

non standard spacebar is a no go

Came here to say this. When I was shopping for my first mechanical keyboard I was torn between the Filco and Leopold TKL boards. Once I learned about the goofy spacebar on the Leopold my decision was easy. I almost never see a set of keycaps that *wont* fit a Filco while there are tons of people jumping through hoops trying to find a non-standard spacebar for their Leopold.

Yeah Leopold pretty much dug their own grave for the enthusiast market.  I thought about buying the FC700R before but the spacebar settles it.

Though I'm assuming for the general consumer they probably won't know the difference anyway.  But then again I really don't see any real reason for them to switch the stem location aside from wanting to screw you over.
