Topre Realforce sound

Hey lads,

After a couple pinging experiences with plate-mounted, Cherry MX brown boards, I'm looking for alternative keyboards that are not making metallic sounds on the upstroke. I'm making a new thread here to focus on the sound of the Topre boards.

How would a Topre Realforce fair in this category? I don't care about click-clack noise in this regards, only for the high-pitched metallic sound that occurs, you know what I'm talking about.

This is a very accurate example of what Topre Realforce sounds like. As you can hear, there's no metal pinging.

Nice vids. The plated sound seemed to be sharper and the hhkb was more muffled

Man... I just recently bought a Filco, and I have the Topre sitting in the storage, and seeing all these videos made me miss my Topre.

I know, I know. I should bust it out again, and I will eventually. I'm just spending time getting acclimated to this Filco.

That said, since I've had the Topre in storage for a couple of weeks, I don't remember the exact details... BUT, as all those videos show, it's a quiet keyboard. It's definitely quieter than my Filco, and I definitely remember it NOT pinging, IIRC. When I first got the Filco I immediately noticed heavy pinging, so that probably means there wasn't that much ping, or any at all, with the Topre to begin with.

HHKB does not ping - it does not have a plate as such.

RealForce has a plate, but I have not heard of them pinging.

I know personal preference and everything, but the sound of Topre isn't much different than a rubber dome with a snap back at the end. Really sounds muffled and gross. Still plan to own / try one, but seems mushy and undistinct over a tactile and clicky keyboard.

It doesn't sound anything like a normal rubber dome keyboard...I mean, probably half the reason people like Topre is the sound...Do you think if it sounded like any other keyboard that would be the case?

It certainly doesn't feel anything like rubber dome!

Actually, maybe it does, but technically as a rubber dome keyboard, it feels so much better than membrane rubber dome keyboards!

there are so many factors affecting perception of sound between two people in the same room, it's not surprising that people can 'hear the same sound' and still disagree what it sounds like over the internet.

can we at least agree on that?

I would agree.  I wouldn't say that I can definitely hear the Thorpe thock, at least not as it is depicted in numerous videos on the interwebs.

But then my desk and room acoustics would be playing a role in that.

If you are referring to the Filco "ping" then try a Ducky or lube the springs of the switches. No ping. On the other hand if you're referring to the sound of the slider hitting the switch top when releasing the key, both MX and Topre keys do that. The only ones that don't are Topre-S (silenced) and Matias Quiet switches. The sound is still there, but the volume and tone are changed.

You can mod standard Topre and MX switches to reduce / deaden the sound, though. Dental band modded Topre, or latex modded MX switches. They do a better job than the commercial "silent" switch types, IMHO.

Keycaps can also change the sound a little. Heavier ones create lower pitch sounds on bottoming out and release.

keep in mind that dental o-ring modding a topre switch will noticeably reduce the travel. i hit a lot of 'ghost' keys just by resting my hands on the keyboard.
