My New Ergodox
« on: Wed, 29 January 2014, 08:26:45 »
Hey all,

So I just got in on the Massdrop group buy for the Ergodox. I was wondering how much time it took for others to get their Ergodoxes from the other Massdrop group buys? I was also wondering what the quality of the acrylic case is?

I mean, I'm not in Europe..I might be missing it but I was really wondering about the shipping time. Was there mention of that in that thread?

The drops usually take anywhere from 6-8 weeks.

daerid, thank you! I had heard rumors of late April and I was freaking out. I will definitely take 6-8 instead of 8-10 weeks.

I bought mine in August, drop ended in mid to late september, didn't see mine until late November. Then again, that drop was unique as it fell in to the timeframe of the chinese holidays I believe, so that's why it took some time, but usually it's about a month or two after the drop.

Okay, well, Welcome to Geekhack!

The first thing to know about group buys, even Massdrop ones, is that it is a process, and there are stages. The first stage is ordering (after interest check, if done). That stays open for a while to let people participate, and increase numbers, so that the final costs are lower. Then comes invoicing/payment. This gives everyone a couple weeks or so to get payments in to the organizer. Then the item goes to production. The organizer usually doesn't have the funds to front production costs, so this has to wait until all monies are collected, minus those who drop out because they can't afford it. Production can take a while, depending upon if prototypes need to be made, error checking, etc. Not to mention holidays where the production facilities are. Once the items have been made, they are shipped to the organizer or thier proxy(-ies). Then everything gets sorted, packaged, and shipped to you.

So that's why you need a whole lot of patience when participating in a group buy. Some have been known to take up to a year or more to complete!

Thanks! That makes the process much easier to understand. From the Group Buys that I have seen, they all look worth the wait. I really don't care how long it takes this Ergodox to get to my doorstep. I'm just glad that I got in when I could.

I ordered my latest Dox in November (11/20/2013, to be precise). I just heard from MassDrop today that it will be shipping out early next week. So that makes it a tad over 8 weeks I think.

I got mine from the very first massdrop, which happened exactly a year ago. Got the kit in late April IIRC. The acrylic case was far from perfect.

Nowadays, I'd recommend to go with either czarek's GB, or build the kit by yourself (see this comment on reddit).

His church is growing ...
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I know this topic has derailed a bit, but in answer to your initial question: I ordered mine Nov. 25 and received notice it shipped tonight.
