Let’s open her up. Or
Here, we dont do an "open it up"
we undress her
Here’s a bit of my keyboard experience:
My Daily Driver(s):
1. Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja (Cherry MX Red) with PBT caps.
2. Filco Majestouch 2 Ninja (Cherry MX Brown) on occasion.
My Experience with Switches:
I generally touch type quickly without looking at the keyboard. My preferred Cherry MX switches are definitely the Reds. MX Reds are a joy to touch type on and I've never had issues with accidentally depressing keys on the reds.
I started as a MX Blue user and I really liked the tactile feeling of the Blue switches. That was my first taste of a mechanical keyboard. Motivated partially by a desire to try new and different things, I decided to grab a MX Red keyboard instead of sticking with MX Blues. Although I do occasionally miss the tactile click of the blues, I do prefer the reds because I can depress the keys with minimal effort and touch type much faster on the reds. In a sense, I grew out of the tactile feedback crowd.
I’ve also tried black and green switches but I have not used them in any serious capacity.
I also have extensive experience with MX Brown keys. Browns and Reds have very similar feelings until you reach the actuation point. I do like the general feeling of the Browns but I type faster on the Reds.
So why’d you pick the Realforce 87U All-45G Keyboard?I’m a Cherry MX Red user so I figured 45G would be the way to go.
Originally, I had planned to wait for the CM Novatouch but things never go as you plan. You could say that fate steers you asunder and beckons you in other directions. I just say that I’m a fickle person.
In all seriousness, I felt growing dissatisfaction with Cherry MX in general and this prompted my change into Topre.
PLUS:
• I've been fighting the impulse to switch my full sized keyboard to a TKL.
• I've been wanting to try Topre switches for ages.• It's made in Japan.
• It comes with PBT keycaps.
• I wanted blank keycaps but I'll settle for these hard to read black on black ones
• I wanted a nice premium product.
• The time was right and it just felt like the right thing to do. (On Sale)Thanks to the whimsical forces that be, I acquired my first Realforce Topre keyboard.A good way to break in a keyboard is to write a review. I’m also formatting a computer while writing this. Seriously, windows update + store + windows 8.1 is a POS. No kidding.
Realforce 87U All-45G Keyboard Particulars. These are nice keys but they do have sprue marks.
This key puller looks like a POS. I’ll probably stay away from using it.
I’m not a fan of the gap in the middle of the bezel.
This gap looks ugly but hell nobody looks at their keyboard anyways.
This board is quite sturdy and some heft to it. It does not move around.
I never really considered Topre seriously until recently because I always thought that Topre was essentially a fancy rubber dome that would feel mushy. I’m happy to report that isn’t the case.
This keyboard feels very similar to an old IBM keyboard I used to use with windows 3.0. I’m going through some serious nostalgia right now.
It’s swell and a joy to type on. Initially the Topre’s did feel a bit stiff but after 40 minutes of typing I’ve somewhat acclimated to the new switch.
There is a very distinctive and pronounced feeling to the Topre switches that I can’t quite describe yet. It has the essence of an old 90’s IBM keyboard combined with the touch of a cherry MX red.
There isn’t really much more to say other than I like this keyboard and I wish I had blank keycaps.
Now that I’ve actually used Topre:Topre tends to be a very touchy subject. I won’t get into this too much but I do think that people who tend to prefer clicky, tactile switches don’t like Topre. I think people who prefer linear switches tend to like Topre. I would say that’s my general characterization/impression.
To me, Topre’s feel better than Cherry MX’s. Cherry MX’s have this unpolished feeling that recently started to bother me … and such wobby keys.
Again, to each and their own!
Let’s compare this to my Filco with PBT caps (take this with a graint of salt because the Filco (standard, non TKL) is a bit wide for this scale)An Olde to my Filco:I love Filco, I really do. It’s such a nice keyboard except it:
1) Doesn’t come with PBT keycaps.
2) Has slight driver issues that causes my computer to not recognize the keyboard sometimes. (for example when my computer is trying to boot up again after it goes to sleep/hibernate).
3) Is quite expensive for what it offers (and doesn’t come with PBT keycaps).
4) Has alleged QC issues. Some people don’t feel that the Filco provides enough polish for its price point.
There are some other pros and cons but these are my main gripes with Filco. That being said Filco is still a great quality board.
Now let's talk about money:Yes, I definitely feel like I got my money’s worth for this board.
I don't feel that way about my Filco, however.
The Filco is about 140-150 dollars in the US. A set of PBT keycaps goes from 30-60 dollars.
When all is said and done, you might as well have gotten a Realforce ... I mean unless you don't like Topre.
Anyways Filco, it's not you it's me. It's time to part for now. Goodbye
Regarding 45 vs 55:Thanks to those who gave me feedback about which Topre switch to go for.
Many people suggested I go for the 55 and others suggested the 45 for me.
I haven’t tried the 55 and I’m even slightly tempted to try a 35 but I am definitely happy with 45 for now.
Let’s start a RealForce club!I’ve officially joined the Topre club.
Here’s to many joyous months with my new keyboard!
Cheers
