Matias Mini Quiet Pro, new keyboard, one noisy switch
« on: Sun, 02 February 2014, 09:19:23 »
I recently bought a Matias Mini Quiet Pro.

I really like the keyboard. I like the noise it makes and the feeling of the switches.

Unfortunately, there is one key that generates a clicky noise that no other key makes. It is the 'down' arrow key which I use often when, for example, reading a web page. It is annoying enough that I am thinking of returning the keyboard.

Though, to me, the idea of returning a keyboard just because of that problem is ridiculous.

Is this a common problem with these keyboards? Is there a way I could fix it myself?

Thanks for your help guys.

I don't know if it's just me, but I find that, most of the time, I have to assemble Alps and Alps clone switches twice. That is, after reassembling the switch, I have to disassemble and reassemble a second time. Something just never goes back in the first time and the switch can't be fully depressed. Probably something to do with the return spring.

You may find that you can open the switch and reassemble it in case something isn't quite seated right. Simplified ("Fuhua"/"Fukka") Alps switches are fairly easy to open in place, but I've never tried it on a Matias switch — they do seem to have tighter tolerances on the support grooves for the contacts, i.e. a tighter fit, and it's the really tight fit of the contact plates in typical clones that makes them so freakishly hard to open and reassemble without first desoldering them.

I did notice that Matias quiet click switches do make a sound if they're not struck centrally.

The switches are of course transparent; I don't know whether you would be able to make out whether anything is wrong simply from a visual inspection.

I don't know how to fix the problem, but am just here to say that my friend's Matias had the exact same problem. It was one of the arrow keys as well. The shop she bought it from took it back and replaced it.

You should return it.  Matias' customer service is excellent, and they probably won't give you a hard time.  Better to do that than be annoyed or have to modify the keyboard yourself, which you shouldn't have to do.  I have a laptop pro, which has the same quiet switches, and none of them make any clicking noise like a clicky ALPS.  They probably mixed up one of the switches on your board, they've had some manufacturing issues in the past from what I understand, but always stand by their product and go out of their way to make a customer happy.
